Harriet E. Callin was the daughter of William H. Callin and Elizabeth Berlin, born on 2 Mar 1838 in Richland County, Ohio and grew up on her father’s farm in Peru Township, Huron County, Ohio.[1][2]
Harriet married William Sly on 7 Dec 1858 in Monroeville, Huron County, Ohio. William was born about 1834 in Wiltshire, England, the son of James Sly (1786–1849) and Susannah Kelley (1796–1847) of Horningsham.[3][4]
After their wedding, the young couple lived in Oxford, Erie County, Ohio in 1860. William registered for the draft in Plain Township, Wood County, Ohio, on 1 Jul 1863, and he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1866 in Bowling Green, Wood, Ohio. The Sly family lived in Plain Township, Wood, Ohio on 14 Jul 1870 and remained there through at least 1880.[5][6][7][8][9][10]
William Sly and Harriet E. Callin had five children:
“ILLNESS IS ENDED Mrs. Harriet Sly Passed Away Thursday Evening Mrs. Harriet Sly passed away after a protracted illness Thursday evening at 9:30. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Rev. Siddall officiating. Harriet Callin was born in Ashland county March 2, 1838. Her parents moved to Huron county in 1849, where she was married to William Sly in 1859. In February, 1862, they moved to Bowling Green and resided on a farm west of town until about 1891, when they came to live in town, residing on Liberty street, where Wm Sly died in 1894. Elmer Sly, a son, having preceded him to the better world. Mrs. Sly’s home was been with her son, Eugene, for the last four years. She having been an invalid for thirty years, welcomed the release from suffering which came to her Dec. 27, 1906. She leaves two sons, William J. and Eugene T., and one daughter, Mrs. May Mills of Montpelier, Ind., to mourn her loss. Mrs. Alice Young, another daughter, died 1897. Three brothers, John H. of Fostoria, and George W. and Zimri Callin of Bowling Green, survive her. Mrs. Sly was a woman of sweet and loving disposition, with wonderful self control and unlimited kindness for her family and friends.”
[Leanna’s note: Dec. 28th was Friday, so she died on the 27th and, assuming she was buried right after the funeral, she would have been buried on the 29th.]
