Martin Brown, Brother Of Late Chief, Dies

Martin Brown, 85, of 204 North Washington Street, died Saturday morning at 4:20 at his home from a stroke suffered Monday.

Mr. Brown was a brother of the late Michael Brown, former Wilkes-Barre City chief of police.

Born in Wilkes-Barre November 1, 1869, he had resided here his entire life.

He was employed for 39 years at the Coxton Yards of Lehigh Valley Railroad, retiring in 1937, and received a pension between 1937-1938.

Mr. Brown was a member of St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception Church and its Holy Name Society.

Surviving are his wife, the former Anna Moran of Wilkes-Barre; nine sons and two daughters: Frank, Joseph, Leonard, James, Paul and Martin, Jr., all of Newark, N.J.: Mrs. Edward Conwell, Thomas and Eugene, Wilkes-Barre; Mrs. John Glofka, WIlkes-Barre, and Emmett at home; 30 grandchildren: 17 great-grandchildren: and two sisters, Misses Bridget and Catherine Brown, Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 from the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 142 South Washington Street, with requiem mass at 9:30 in St. Mary's Church.

Interment in parish cemetery, Hanover Township.

NOTE:

Not mentioned in this obituary, is that he was the son of Patrick Brown and Mary Ann Stone, who predeceased him, as well as the following children: Mary Brown, Robert Brown, and Leo Brown, and three other children that I have yet to find any record of at this time, as family lore is that they had 17 children, and I found 14 of them.
