Helen Elizabeth Blackwell
Helen was born in February 1908. She was the 3rd of 5 children born to James Blackwell and Nettie Price.
In the 1910 Census, 2 year old Helen was living in Shady Hill, Lincoln, Georgia with her parents and siblings. Her father worked as a bookkeeper for a general store, and afforded to keep a hired nurse named Lillie Williams. Helen's grandmother also was living in the house, spending her widowhood with her daughter's family.[1]
On the 13th of October 1913, Helen's mother, Nettie, set out for Thomson, Georgia in the buggy. Three of her children were with her, since she had five children at the time, I am unsure which children were with her. Most likely, Helen was with her mother. When Nettie whipped the mule, it kicked her in the heart, and killed her instantly. Helen was around 5 years old at the time of her mother's death.[2]
Her father remarried a year later to Lillie Violet Brown on 25 October 1914.[3] James and Lillie had 7 more children, half siblings to Helen.
In the 1920 Census, 12 year old Helen was living in Lincolnton, Lincoln, Georgia with her father and step mother.[4] Her father was working as a merchant in a general store, and was able to afford a cook named Eldora Williams. Helen was attending school as were her siblings. Her half siblings were still too young for school. Later that year, in October, Her brother Robert dies. He passed due to complications with appendicitis. He was 16 years old.[5]
In the 1930 Census, Helen was living in Newark, Essex, New Jersey as a boarder with the Werner family. She was working as a nurse for a private family.[6] I don't know how Helen ended up in New Jersey, but she eventually married the Werner's son Herbert.
I am estimating the marriage between Helen and Herbert Werner to be around 1931. This is based on the birth of their son Herbert Jr., who is seen in the 1940 census age 8.[7]
In the 1940 Census, Helen is living in Ward 2, Clifton, Clifton City, Passaic, New Jersey with her husband and son. Her husband is working as an engineer at a rubber company. She and her husband both graduated high school, and their son was in the 3rd grade.[7]
She passed away March 1 1949. The only source I have for her birth and death are hand written notes made by my grandmother, her half-sister.
