Biography

J. W. Blackwell

James William "J.W." Blackwell was born September 26, 1878 in Parksville, South Carolina.[1] He was the 2nd of 4 children born to W.A.D. Blackwell and Elizabeth Reid. He spent his early years in Edgefield, South Carolina, which is where he was living in the 1880 United States Federal Census. He was a year old and the second born child, his father was working as a miller.[2] His father and mother had 2 more children before his mother died in 1887. J. W. was only 8 years old at the time of her death.[3] His father remarried around 1889 to Hattie Stone, and together they had 8 more children, for a total of 11 siblings.

James volunteered for the Spanish American War in 1898. He was proud of his service and his fellow soldiers. He was quoted, "None of them were drafted and none of them were afraid to die."[4] His Spanish American War Index card[5] lists his rank as Private in Company E, 2nd Georgia Infantry.

Sometime between 1880 and 1900, he made the move to Lincoln County, Georgia. He is found in the 1900 United States Federal Census living as a single man working as a clerk in a general store.[6] James' cousin, John Marshall Price, owned a general store in Double Branches, Lincoln, Georgia called the Price's Store. According to his daughter, Lillie, this is the general store where James was working in 1900.

That same year on November 3, 1900, James married his first wife, Nettie Price in the home of W. M. Reid. W. M. Reid was William Marshall Reid, uncle of the Bride and the Groom.[7][8] She was 17 years old when she married J. W. and he was 22.

Nettie and James were 1st cousins; their mothers were sisters. Nettie was born December 18, 1883 in Double Branches, Lincoln, Georgia.[9]

She was the 9th of 10 children born to Robert and Idella Price. Nettie was the sister of John Marshall Price, owner of the general store where James worked.

In the 1910 United States Federal Census, James was still working in the store as a book keeper. He was wealthy enough to keep a servant to help Nettie with the children. In the census, Lillie Williams, aged 14, was listed as a nurse. His Aunt/Mother-in-law was also living with his family in her widowhood. [10]

Nettie died October 1, 1913. She was kicked by a mule and died as a result.[9][11] Family story tells that she was pregnant at the time, which makes the accident doubly tragic. Nettie is buried in the Double Branches Baptist Church Cemetery in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, Georgia. She was 29 years old when she died and the mother of 5 children.

A little over a year later on October 25, 1914, James married again to Lillie Violet Brown in Sybert, Georgia.[7][12] Lillie was born June 13, 1891 in Lincoln, Georgia.[13] She was the 2nd of 5 children born to Ezera “Tell” Estelle Brown and Hattie Lou Wheatley. In 1914, when she married J. W., she was 23 years old to his 36.

In 1918, James filled out a U.S. World War I Draft Card. He was described as medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair.[14]

In the 1920 United States Federal Census, J. W. was still working at the store in Lincoln County, Georgia. He and Lillie had 8 children at home, 3 from from their own union, 5 from his previous marriage. Lillie had a cook to help feed their large growing family. Eldora Williams, aged 21, was listed as a cook in the household. It is wondered if Lillie the nurse from the 1910 census is related to Eldora since they share the same surname.[15]

In the 1930 United States Federal Census, James was working as a Hosiery salesman. All of his children had been born at this time. Between both marriages, the total was 12 children.[16]

In the 1940 United States Federal Census, James was working as a traveling salesman of wholesale hardware. He sold cookware door to door about this time as well. His two sons living with him, James and Aubrey, were also working. James owned his own grocery and Aubrey was an engineer working highway construction.[17]

In the 1950 census James was an ax handle salesman and the married head of household in District 186, Lincoln, Georgia, United States. At the age of 71, he was mostly retired and kept busy with his wood working. Lillie was still keeping house.[18]

He died March 23 1962 in the Veteran's Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, and was buried in the Double Branches Cemetery in Lincoln, Georgia.[19][4][20] Lillie followed him in death on January 14, 1970. She was laid to rest beside her husband.[13]
