Biography
Howard A. Black was born in January 1855, the eldest son of Samuel Black and Mary Elizabeth Watts. For unknown reasons he was absent from the 1860 Census. Howard grew up in Calais, Maine where his father worked as a telegraph operator, then became the station manager. By 1900 Howard, who was also a telegrapher, ran the station. By 1905, Howard had relocated to Brooklyn, New York. Howard married Minerva Lowell in 1883. He died in New York City in 1938 at age 83 and was buried in Moravian Cemetery.
