Amy's mother Mary died in 1891[4] and in the 1901 census Amy was in an orphanage in Reigate, Surrey, England. She did well at the nearby St. Luke's Church of England school and won prizes for her schoolwork and her needlework[5]
From the school's logbook: 23rd April 1900 Returned today after the Easter Holiday. I have received today a notice from the Sanitary Inspector stating that Amy Benting of the Whitehall Orphanage is suffering from diptheria and that the children of the home must not therefore attend school. This means that nine children are absent from this cause.
Update in school logbook: 21st May 1900 The following children have returned today under the Doctors Permission. They come from Whitehall ... Clara Benting ... Anne Lucas returns next week and also Amy Benting the latter is the child who has been suffering from diptheria.
On the 10th May 1927 Amy was found, age 37, on the passenger list for the ship Largs Bay which was sailing to Brisbane Australia. Ticket number 799. Unaccompanied female. Occupation given as Governess. Embarked London. The address that she had been living at was "June", Elmer road, Middleton, Bognor.[6]
From Yvonne Benting I believe that Amy married ten years after arriving in Australia and lived the rest of her life there. Once I have established the facts I will update this profile Yvonne 15:26, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
From Yvonne Benting when I first discovered this branch of the family in the early 1990s as I trawled through microfilm census returns in Shropshire Archives I was intrigued as to how they fit into my own branch (Amy's father Edward Benting is the sister of my great great grandmother Mary Benting). When the 1901 census became available I was upset to find Amy as an orphan in Reigate, Surrey. Now thanks to the wonders of the interweb I have been able to follow her progress through school and onwards to Australia. There are still unanswered questions but i'm sure that in time I will gain a full picture of Amy's life.
