Biography

John, born about 1788, emigrated from Ireland to Upper Canada (Ontario). He married Elizabeth Stewart in 1823 and they settled in Trafalgar Township, Halton, Ontario, where they farmed and raised a large family. They were founding members of the Church of Christ, Omagh, Ontario.[1]

In an 1821 petition to the crown for a grant of land in Trafalgar Township, it's noted that John had been absent from the area for a time and due to ill health had not been able to complete improvement to land he was previously occupying in the area.[2]

John Beaty and Elizabeth Jane Stewart were married on 11 Sep 1823 in Halton, Ontario, Canada. [3]

They had thirteen children, nine daughters and four sons;

  1. Robert Beaty (1824-1901), Banker and Broker, Toronto
  2. Stewart Beaty (1826-1865)
  3. William Crawford Beaty (1828-1905) Esq., Secretary of the Halton County Agricultural Association
  4. Catherine (Beaty) Earl (1829-1892)
  5. James Beaty QC (1831-1899), Alderman, Toronto, QC
  6. Mary Ann (Beaty) Farley (1834 - 1911)
  7. Elizabeth Jane (Beaty) Robinson (1836-1911)
  8. Margaret (Beaty) McCartney (1838-1927)
  9. Martha Beaty (1840-1841)
  10. Martha (Beaty) Standish (1842-1929)
  11. Eleanor Beaty (1845 - 1847)
  12. Sarah (Beaty) Paton (1847 - 1930)
  13. Rebecca (Beaty) Crull (1849-1926)

In 1825, he petitioned the crown for a grant of a further 100 acres in Trafalgar Township.[4]

"He took part on the Loyalist side in the rebellion of 1837, arrived in Toronto just after the battle of Gallow's Hill, [5] went to Chippeway and witnessed the running over the Falls and burning of the Caroline. He died April 23rd 1870, having lived in Trafalgar 50 years, and leaving his farm in the possession of one of the members of his familv." [3]

John's brother James Beaty Sr. and his son, also called James Beaty QC, were both Members of Parliament.[6]

John died in 1870 . He was buried at Omagh Church of Christ Cemetery, Milton, Halton Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada. [7][8]
