Disputed Origins

Though a baptismal record exists for a Deborah Bains, daughter of Matthew and Margaret Baines - there is no evidence to prove that Deborah is the same woman who came to Pennsylvania and married Thomas Ashton.

She apparently did not sail in 1687 with Matthew, Margaret and their other four children - there is record of that fateful voyage which killed the parents and two children. The other two were taken in by Quaker families.

There is record, however, of a Deborah Baynes, sister of Gabriel who in 1698 came to Falls Monthly Meeting from Settle Monthly Meeting in Yorkshire, England.

This Deborah is proven to be the same woman who married Thomas Ashton, as noted in the will of Gabriel Baynes. Baynes names as his heirs Thomas and Deborah (Baynes) Ashton's daughter, Ann (Ashton) Hillbourne and the children of already deceased daughter Mary (Ashton) Lee.

Note: Thomas Ashton's son Isaac (presumed son of Deborah Baynes) is not named as an heir of Gabriel Baynes.

The parents of Gabriel Baynes - Bryan and Ann Baynes are therefore the correct parents of Deborah Baynes, wife of Thomas Ashton.

GABRIEL BAINS of Falls Township, County of Bucks, Province of Pennsylvania, Yeoman.

To be buried in graveyard at plantation of neighbor Thos. Watson. £1 to said Thos. Watson, toward repairing fence around said graveyard.

Residue of personal estate equally divided between well beloved wife Ellin Bains and Son Bryan Bains. Son to Plantation at 21,

If son dies without issue, estate divided into equal thirds (after wife's decease) to Brother Thomas Bains, Sister Agnes Wood, and Cousin Ann Hilburn and Cousin Mary Lee's 2 children, John and Deborah Lee.

Wife, Mark Watson, and Robert Sotcher, executors.  Wit: Nehemiah Blackshaw, John Sotcher, Jos. Kirkbride, Junr.
