Clifton (age 25) enlisted in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, on August 15, 1917, for World War I. He served at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, Infantry, until his discharge on August 22, 1919.[4]

Clifton died on June 15, 1941, in Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina, United States, aged 49.[7][8] He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Barnesville, Lamar County, Georgia.[9]
