Uel (age 30) signed up for the World War I Draft on June 5, 1917. He was described as medium height, medium build with brown hair and brown eyes. His occupation was listed as Attorney-at-Law." He stated that he had previously been a part of the Georgia Militia for 1 year.[3] He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Quartermaster Corp on August 16, 1917, as a QMC At Large. Uel would remain in the Army until his discharge on October 29, 1919.[4] His paperwork showed him as being on an Army Transport Ship, The Matoika, returning from Brest, France, on August 29, 1919, arriving in Hoboken, New Jersey, on September 10, 1919.[5]

Uel (age 33) married Bobbie Matthews (age 32); daughter of Robert Grier Matthews (1851-1925) and Mary Ellen Blalock (1851-1899); on December 18, 1919, in Georgia.[6]
