Charles Simon Barrett was born on January 28, 1866, in McDowell Township, Pike, Georgia, United States, son of Thomas Jefferson Barrett (1831–1900) and Minerva Ann Slade (1833–1883).[1]

Charles' education included the local school system as well attending schools in Bowling Green, Kentucky; Valparaiso, Indiana; and Lebanon, Ohio.[1][2]

Charles (age 25) married Laura Alma Rucker (age 20); daughter of Caswell Francis Rucker (1846-1917) and Mary F. Howell (1844-1928); on November 5, 1891, in Pike County, Georgia, United States.[3] They had the following children:

  1. Paul Simon Barrett (1898-1955)
  2. Thomas Charles Barrett Sr (1900-1980)
  3. Howell Slade Barrett (1903-1981)
  4. Leland Arleigh Barrett (1904-1968)
  5. Gaines Rucker Barrett (1906-1965)
  6. John Barrett (1912-1995)

Charles died on April 4, 1935, in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia, United States, aged 69.[4][2] He was buried in Shadnor First Baptist Church Cemetery, Union City, Fulton County, Georgia.[5]

Farmers' Union

In 1905, Charles (age 39) would become involved with the newly founded Farmers' Educational and Cooperative Union aka Farmers' Union. He was the first president of the Georgia State Union which he helped organize in Atwater, Upson, Georgia, United States. By 1906, Charles would be involved in making the Union go national. He became the first national president, and he would remain the national president, by unanimous vote, for the next 22 years.[1] He would eventually be appointed a member of President Theodore Roosevelt's country life commission, and Secretary William Jennings Bryan would name him as a delegate to the international agricultural institute in Rome, Italy.[2]
