The Charles Barrett family records[2], my grandfather, indicate that the parents of James Washington Barrett (1874-1948) were Lewis Barrett and Martha Miller Lockley. Research seems to indicate that Margaret Miller was the first wife of William Lewis Barrett and Martha Suggs was his second wife. James W. Barrett(5) appears in the C1880 as the son of Louis and Martha Barrett, shortly after Lewis's second marriage. In the C1880, Martha seems to be the one providing the information to the census taker as the birth locations of Louis Barrett's parents are listed as unknown and his two children by his first marriage to Margaret as listed in the C1870 are listed as step children. Also, in the C1870, two of Lewis's younger siblings appear to be listed in his household possibly because their last parent Thomas Barrett seems to have died sometime around 1870. Louis Barrett is listed in C1880 as illiterate.GRK
