Biography

Mary Barnett daughter of Benjamin Barnett and his wife, Mary Willin, born in August 1702, she was baptised at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire on 8 September 1702. [1].

Marriage

Mary married Arthur Colbrook (abt.1700-) on 30 January 1718 in St Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Arthur must have died before 1729. They had a daughter Mary Colbrook (bef.1720-) baptised July 1720 in the Independent chapel in Gosport High Street. [2]

Mary (the widow, Mrs Colebrook at this point) married Master Curtis King RN (abt.1700-1745) on 25 September 1729 and they had six children. [3][4] [5]:

Children

  1. Admiral Sir Richard King (1730-1806) MP, Colonial Governor and 1st Baronet, described as third, but only surviving son; born in Gosport, Hampshire and baptised in Holy Trinity Church there 27 August 1730; [6] [7]
  2. Curtis King (bef.1735-) (Jr.) Baptised Holy Trinity, Gosport. [8] unmarried and died in 1754 in Madagascar;
  3. Mary (King) Orton (bef.1737-1806) - who married Thomas Orton MD (abt.1730-1797). She was baptised Holy Trinity, Gosport in 1737; [9] [10][11]
  4. Elizabeth King (bef.1738-) (died without issue) Bap. Holy Trinity, Gosport [12];
  5. Arnold King (bef.1740-) baptised 23 February 1740 at Holy Trinity Church, Gosport, Hampshire;
  6. Benjamin King (bef.1742-) baptised 25 September 1742 at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire. [13];

Death

Her husband died in 1745 and he was buried in Bromley, Kent (see his profile). Mary's death tbc

Research Notes

Slight suspicion that Mary's daughter with Arthur is right - why baptise in an independent chapel when both marriages are in St Thomas, Portsmouth and subsequent baptisms are all in CofE church ??
