Biography

Isaac Emmerson Ballard was the son of Isaac D Ballard (1817–1891) and Mary Ann Keith (1822–1894), born on 30 Mar 1859 in Polk County, Iowa. He spent his early childhood on his father's farm in Delaware Township, Polk County, moving with his family to Rochester Township, Andrew County, Missouri by 1870, farming near Whitesville.[1][2]

In 1880, Isaac lived with his widowed sister, Rachel Fredericks, and her three children in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa. He worked as a drayman. In 1885 he resided with his parents, who had moved to Pacific Junction in Plattville Township, Mills County, Iowa. Their neighbors were a family named Rupe.[3][4][5]

Isaac married Mary Ann Rupe (1867–1946) in 1886, and they resided in Pacific Junction and in Glenwood, Mills County.

Isaac Ballard and Mary Ann Rupe had the following children:

  • Florence (Ballard) Allen Kim (1887–1964)
  • Virginia "Virgie" (Ballard) Shuffler Steele (1889–1977)

  • Hattie Ballard (b. 1892)
  • Vivian E (Ballard) Gatch Post (1894–1989)

Isaac was a brakeman for the railroad in 1900, and the family lived in Plattville Township. Soon after this, Isaac and Mary Ann divorced. He married Edna May Purvis (1879–1972) on 18 Jul 1904 • St Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri, and they moved to Oakland, California, where Isaac was working as a switchman for the railroad in 1910. The couple had twins, a boy and a girl, before moving back to Wayne, Buchanan County, Missouri, where they resided in 1920.[6][7][8]

Isaac Ballard and Edna May Purvis had the following children:

  • Evelen Edna (Ballard) Corbin Wells (1912–2001)
  • Ellis Emmett Ballard (1912–1987)
