Cloyd Asbury Bailey Sr. (see research note re: Middle Name) was born 18 March 1862 in Tazewell County, Virginia to John Asbury Bailey and Sarah Virginia Prunty[1]. After Cloyd's birth, Cloyd's father served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War[2][3]. Unfortunately, before the end of the Civil War, Cloyd's mother passed away[3].
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Cloyd (enumerated with the name "Floyd") and his father lived with his father's parents, Zachariah and Rachel. They lived in Elkhorn Township in McDowell County, now part of West Virginia. Also in the household were two of Cloyd's father's siblings[4].
Cloyd's father remarried in 1878[5]. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Cloyd (again enumerated with the name "Floyd") lived with his father and step-mother in Elkhorn District, McDowell County, West Virginia. Also in the household was Cloyd's one year old half sister, Elvira[6].
In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Cloyd and his second wife, Lucy, lived on their own farm in Big Creek District, McDowell County, West Virginia. Also in their household were Cloyd's six children from his first marriage[26].
On 1 September 1924, Cloyd's father signed his last will and testament. This document identified Cloyd using the name "Claude" and indicated that "Claude" lived in "Canebrake, _Va." (this location is likely a reference to Canebrake within McDowell County, West Virginia, located just west of Squire). Cloyd's father would pass away just a few days later[27].
On 19 March 1934 in Squire, McDowell County, West Virginia, Cloyd signed his own last will and testament. This document named his second wife, six children from his prior marriage, and one son from his second marriage. He made a slight amendment to his will via a codicil that he signed on 1 February 1939 in Squire, McDowell County, West Virginia[13].
In the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Cloyd and Lucy lived on their own farm in Big Creek District, McDowell County, West Virginia. Cloyd's occupation was "Land Engineer". Also in the household was their son, Cloyd Jr., his son's wife, Lola, their daughter (Cloyd and Lucy's granddaughter), Nancy, and a boarder named Viola Logan (relationship, if any, unknown)[28].
Cloyd was 78 years old when he passed away. He died on 4 February 1941 in Squire, McDowell County, West Virginia[1]. Cloyd is buried in Maplewood Cemetery located in Tazewell, Tazewell County, Virginia[29]. Cloyd and Lucy had only one child together:
On 26 March 1941, Cloyd's last will and testament (and the associated codicil) was proven and admitted into the McDowell County, West Virginia court record. His will bequeathed the majority of his assets to his second wife, Lucinda, and their son, Cloyd Jr. A smaller portion of his estate was set aside for the six children from his first marriage[13].
Research Notes
Middle Name
Most records only indicate the initial "A" for his middle name. Only three records (thus far) provide a complete spelling of his middle name:
Asbury
His son Cloyd Jr.'s World War 2 Draft Registration Card names Cloyd Sr. as the nearest relative. Both Cloyd Jr. and Cloyd Sr. use the middle name of "Asbury"[30].
His own grave marker is engraved with the name "Asbury"[29].
His Find-a-Grave memorial uses "Asberry", despite the fact that his grave marker spells his middle name as "Asbury"[29].
Given that his father's middle name was "Asbury", it seems likely that his middle name was also "Asbury".
1920 U.S. Federal Census
Cloyd has not yet been located in the 1920 U. S. Federal Census. Neither have his second wife, his two youngest children from his 1st marriage, and his only child from his second marriage.
1930 U.S. Federal Census
Cloyd has not yet been located in the 1930 U. S. Federal Census. Neither have his second wife, his four youngest children from his 1st marriage, and his only child from his second marriage.
