Louisa "Eliza" Jane Bailey (see research note re: Her Name) was born 16 March 1866 (see research note re: Birth Date) in Tazewell County, Virginia to Zachariah Henry Bailey Jr. and Elizabeth Dillion[1].
In the 1870 U. S. Federal Census, Eliza lived with her parents and siblings in McDowell County, West Virginia[2]. In the 1880 U. S. Federal Census, Eliza continued to live with her parents, but now in nearby Tazewell County, Virginia[3].
Eliza was only 39 years old when she passed away. She died on 11 January 1905 in McDowell County, West Virginia. The only clue for her cause of death was the single word "Heart" provided on her death record[18]. Her remains were cremated[19].
Research Notes
Her Name
In her early life, her given name was "Louisa", but over time it transitioned to "Eliza":
Louisa - Her birth record[1], and the first two censuses in which she was enumerated (1870[2] and 1880[3]).
Eliza - Her marriage record[4], the 1900 U.S. Federal Census[7], her death record[18], and records associated with some of her children[13][15][16].
Most records that include a middle name provide only her middle initial as "J"[2][4][7][9][18]. Some of her children's records, however, provide her full middle name as "Jane"[15][16].
Birth Date
Louisa has a birth record that indicates she was born on 16 March 1866 in Tazewell County, Virginia[1]. Other records provide a similar estimate for when she was born:
about 1866 - The 1870 U.S. Federal Census, and her marriage record[2][4].
March 1866 - The 1900 U.S. Federal Census and her Find-a-Grave profile (note: there is no photo of a grave marker, likely because she was cremated)[7][19].
about 1867 - The 1880 U. S. Federal Census and her death record[3][18].
