Thompson P. Bailey was born about 1826, in either Tazewell or Giles County, Virginia (see research note re: Birth Details) to George C. Bailey and Frances Thompson[1].
In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Thompson lived with his parents and three siblings in Mercer County, Virginia[2].
On 2 September 1858, Thompson married Mary Jane Fain in Pike County, Kentucky[3]. Mary was born about 1840 in Patrick County, Virginia to Daniel Fain and Sarah Handy.
In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Thompson and Mary (enumerated as "Nancy J.") lived in Mercer County, Virginia. Thompson's occupation was "farmer". Also in their household were two daughters[4].
It is believed that Thompson's first wife, Mary, passed away about 1864, soon after the birth of their son Cyrus[5]. Thompson and Mary had at least four children together:
Martelia F. (Bailey) Shrewsbury b. 1857 d. 1935[6][7][8]
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Thompson and Isabel lived in Rock Township, Mercer County, West Virginia. Thompson's occupation was "farmer". Also in their household were ten children: all four from Thompson's first marriage, five from Isabel's first marriage, and one born to Thompson and Isabel[15].
In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Thompson and Isabel lived in Rock, Mercer County, West Virginia. Thompson's occupation was "farming". Also in their household were five children: one from Isabel's first marriage, two from Thompson Bailey's first marriage, and two born to Isabel and Thompson Bailey[16].
Thompson was 73 years old when his second wife passed away[17]. Thompson and Isabel had at least two children together:
Mary Virginia (Bailey) Taylor b. 1867 d. 1939[18][19][20]
Thompson lived only two more months after his wife's death before he also passed away. He died on 21 June 1899 in Riverside, Mercer County, West Virginia[22]. Note that Riverside was the original name of Montcalm[23]. Thompson is buried at King Cemetery located in Montcalm, Mercer County, West Virginia[24].
Research Notes
Birth Details
A birth record for Thompson has not yet been located. The following records provide evidence for when he was born:
About 1824 - The 1870[15] and 1880[16] U.S. Federal Censuses.
About 1826 - The 1850[2] and 1860[4] U.S. Federal Censuses, and Thompson's second marriage record[1].
These same records also provide evidence for where he was born:
Virginia - The 1850[2], 1860[4], 1870[15], and 1880[16] U.S. Federal Censuses.
Mercer County, Virginia - Thompson's first marriage record[3].
Mercer County, West Virginia - Thompson's second marriage record[1], and the death certificate of his son, Cyrus[14].
Note that Thompson's birth occurred prior to the establishment of West Virginia as a state in 1863, and also prior to the creation of Mercer County in 1837. Mercer County, Virginia was created in 1837 from land located in both Giles County and Tazewell County, Virginia[25]. While it is clear that Thompson was born in Virginia, it is difficult to say with certainty whether he was born in Giles County or Tazewell County.
