John was born about 1729. He married Frances Walker 25 November 1766 in Sessay, Yorkshire. Their eldest son, John, was baptized at Sessay; their next three children were baptized at nearby Topcliffe by Thirsk.
In 1774 they and their children emigrated to Nova Scotia aboard the ship Albion to seek a better livelihood.[1] The births of their later children are recorded in the Southampton (Cumberland County) township book.
John was a tenant of Edward Barron for a number of years before receiving a grant of land at West Brook in Maccan in 1785. In 1790 he received a second grant of land adjacent to his existing property.
John signed a deed transferring land to his son John on 12 February 1813. His will was proved 16 March 1814, so he must have died between those two dates.
Research Notes
Many online family trees assert a specific place of birth for John (e.g. Kirkheaton, Castleford, or Bramley) corresponding with a 1729 christening record for a boy named "John Atkinson" which occurred in that place. Without any evidence connecting these records to the man who married Frances Walker and emigrated to Nova Scotia, there is no reason to assume that any of them refer to the same person.

Atkinson-7649 and Atkinson-7292 appear to represent the same person because: Both are the father of Charles Atkinson who married Elizabeth Metcalf and died in 1842.
The assertion of John's parentage here is highly suspect. It is based on the assumption that the John Atkinson who was baptized in Kirkheaton 13 October 1729 is the same man who married Frances Walker in Sessay 25 November 1766 and emigrated to Nova Scotia. This baptism has long been seized upon by Atkinson researchers because it occurred in 1729 and therefore corresponds with the year of John's birth as calculated from his stated age of 45 at the time of his arrival in Nova Scotia. But there is no reason to believe that this baptism refers to the same John Atkinson; Kirkheaton is a good 50 miles from Sessay and Thirsk. And there are other John Atkinsons who were baptized in Yorkshire between 1728 and 1730, any or none of whom could just as easily be this John Atkinson. Unless additional evidence is found to connect this John with one of the potential baptismal records, his parentage should be considered unknown.
