He married Rose "Rosie" Lee Harris in 1893. In 1900. the family was living in Arlington County, Virginia. William was working as a hotel porter, and wife Rosie as a cook. Apparently Rosie had been married before to a Jackson, as William had four Jackson step-children listed in the census.[1] The household inlcuded:
William Armestead Head Male 38 Virginia
Rosie Armestead Wife Female 37 Virginia
Rosie L Armestead Daughter Female 5 Virginia
Annie Armestead Daughter Female 4 Virginia
Bertha Armestead Daughter Female 0 Virginia
Joseph Jackson Stepson Male 19 Virginia
Mancie Jackson Stepdaughter Female 17 Virginia
Richard Jackson Stepson Male 16 Virginia
Julia Jackson Stepdaughter Female 13 Virginia
Their daughter, Ella, was born in 1896[2], and may be the Annie listed in the 1900 census above, or possibly Annie's twin who may have passed away. The 1900 census stated that Rosa had given birth to 8 children but only seven were living as of 1900.[1]
