Alias: Edmund Crawford Armistead.
Occupation: lawyer - practiced with young Richard Russell who later became a well-known and influential US Senator from Georgia.
Note: Info from granddaughter Ruth Armistead Allen says his middle name should be Crawford. Added June, 2007 by Nanelle's daughter Nancy and Ruth's niece: From Nanelle Milner Armistead written in August, 1966 (sister-in-law of Ruth Armistead Allen): "I have not been able to get much information on the Armistead ancestors. In Greenwood Cemetery, Barnesville, Ga, I found the graves of Edmon Crofford Armistead, born September 12, 1855, died October 21, 1918 and Etta Armistead, born February 26, 1865, died January 20, 1956. Lois Hilton (Etta Lois Armistead 1894-1983) copied the record of her parents' marriage from the court house records in Jefferson, Ga. This is how it reads: Edmon Crofford Armistead, Walton County, and Sarah Henryetta White, of Jackson County, were married on the 29th of January 1882 at Jesse White's by Squire Potter. Witnesses: Jesse White and Wife, Jesse Smith and Brother. In those days there were no law schools and if a young man wanted to study law he simply worked and studied under another lawyer. In 1883, the year after he married, Mr. Armistead began the study of law in this fashion, and became a very successful lawyer. Winder, Georgia, and Jefferson, Georgia are separated by only a few miles. Dick Russell of Winder, an uncle of U.S. Senator Richard B. Russell, was a law partner of Mr. Armistead. Senator Russell was often a guest in the Armistead home during Court Week. Lois Hilton sent an old newspaper picture of the Hon. J. P. Armistead, representative-elect from Oglethorpe County, Ga. He was one of her father's brothers. In 1909 the Armisteads moved from Jefferson, Ga. to Zebulon, Georgia. Later when there was talk of organizing a new county with Barnesville as the county seat, the Armisteads moved to Barnesville. This was about 1913. Mr. Armistead was a very well known and respected lawyer and was called Colonel Armistead. When I married into the family in 1935 people still remembered old Colonel Armistead although he had been dead many years. Colonel Armistead was diabetic and died of blood-poisoning in 1918.".
