Biography

I am a professional songwriter/publisher who lives near Nashville. Family genealogy is one of my favorite pastimes. The primary family surnames that I am researching are: White, Laney, Gorham, Rice, Adams, Adcock, Bean, Berry, Denton, Dunagan, Farrar, Field, Finney, Gaines, Griffin, Haisten, and Hooper, as well as Jefferson, Nelms, Pollard, and Walker.

In the spirit of co-operation and solidarity, My Ancestry Tree is UNLOCKED and open for the benefit of others. I am trying to FIND relatives, not avoid them.

Hoarding or otherwise hiding documentation and old family photos in a locked tree is not only disadvantageous, it is inconsiderate of your own extended family, and benefits no one but yourself. Please do NOT waste my time inviting me to your super-secret locked tree. Especially if your 9th G grandmother was an Indian princess.

And I hate to come across as a complete ass, but we're all adults here, and this is really important:

Many make a big fuss in respect to what they mistakenly perceive as 'copyrighted' material. Since I am in the publishing business, it is my job to be intimately familiar with copyright law. Proper copyrighting is a legal course of action which requires paperwork and monetary outlay, it is not magically granted by the Copyright Wizard.

The act of copyright is carried out in order to protect the rights to authorship, and to prevent unauthorised individuals from profitting off of another individual's personal body of work. In short, if an individual is not the originator of the work in question, they retain no legal copyright to said work. Mere physical possession of another individual's work does not entitle said holder to any form of copyright.

Regarding copyrighted work which originates with a living individual, the Fair Use Doctrine, Section 107 of the United States Copyright Act states:

"The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."

"In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use, the factors to be considered shall include the purpose, and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature, or is for nonprofit educational purposes; the nature of the copyrighted work; the amount, and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and the effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work."

In other words: unless an unauthorised individual is using a legally copyrighted work to make an undue profit, there is no copyright infringement; and unless you are the creator of the work, and have subsequently filed the appropriate paperwork, you retain no legal claim to copyright.

Sorry to be so long winded - but somebody had to say it.

Hi Eddie, I recently sent you a request to add me to the trusted list for Henry Cleveland White (abt.1893-abt.1972), as there is a proposed merge of that profile with a potential duplicate. I'm wondering if you received the request. I'm happy to resend if you didn't receive it. Look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks! Gillian

Eddie,

Thoroughly enjoyed your commentary on your profile page! Some people do take that too far, don't they?

By the way, we share some Laney cousins! Could you do me a favor and merge Archibald C (don't know what the 'C' stands for either) Laney for me? Somehow the software on site missed your Archibald C Laney and I accidently duplicated it.

Thank you for all you do.

Your cousin,

Robert

My RICE line had South Carolina links too. Ever stumped
Hey there Eddie. Thank you for merging the Rea records. Your thought about a missing generation is valid. I have been looking at it and there may be a 2nd wife or some other confusing thing going on here, I just don’t know yet. If you have any thoughts I’d welcome the input. Take care.

Hi Eddie! Thanks so much for participating in the Clean-a-Thon.

You don't need to coordinate with a project when doing minor corrections (e.g., removing "USA" from a pre-USA profile) or maintenance activity (such as doing post-merge cleanup) for pre-1700 profiles.

For the early Virginia profiles, US Southern Colonies is the primary project, but it is working on divesting itself of managing profiles. If a Virginia profile needs to have a project to manage it so that it can be project-protected, let me know the WikiTree ID & I can take care of that (the Virginia Project previously was post-USA, but we're expanding to meet the need).

Thanks again! Liz ~ Project:Virginia

The Forest Elf let us know that you have joined Team 811 for the Clean-a-Thon. Sorry we missed your answer but we're really glad you've joined us. We have a chat thread in G2G where we're introducing ourselves. Would you stop by and chime in.

I've added you to the Team 811 page where some of have said what areas we plan to work on. If you're going to concentrate on a location or time period, feel free to edit and add notes.

Only a couple of days to go, so get your cleaning supplies ready.

Hi, Eddie - Thanks for initiating the merge on Peggy Chambers Richardson. I am inclined to agree that her maiden name was Chambers, in light of the fact that they named one of their children "Chambers", but I have no documentation that her farther was a Chambers. I do have a copy of the marriage license showing Loudy marrying a Margaret Chambers Richardson. I think I saw a note somewhere that the name "Richardson" came from a first marriage. But, again, I can't document that one way or another at this point. So, let's go with "Margaret Chambers" and I'll add the name "Richardson" in the "Other Names" category with a note.
