Andrew engaged in farming...
This profile is part of the Allen Name Study.

Born: Andrew Allen, Jr. was born 9 Sep 1806. Sanford, Maine. He was the son of Ephraim Allen and Lydia (Furbish) Allen. [1] [2] [3]

Marriage: Intentions have been found for Andrew Allen, Jr. to Judith Cole on 6 Nov, 14 Nov, and confirmed 29 Nov 1830 in Sanford where they are both were residents and where Judith was born. [4] [2]

Children: found for this couple. All were born in Sanford, Maine:[1]

1850 Census, Wells, Maine: [1] Andrew age 44 and Judith age 42 are living with their children. He owns the property and both he and his son Thaddeus are farming. All of the children have attended school in the last year.

-Listed lower on the same page are his sons Thaddeus Clarkson's and future wives, Abigail and Melinda Perkins within the home of their parents Japethand Sally Perkins. See line 26 - 32.

1860 Census, Wells, Maine: [5] It appears from their neighbors they are living in the same home as 1850. The couples' son Thaddeus B. has married Abigail Perkins. They and their children: Abbie A. age 6; Andrew age 3; Joseph E. age 1; and another child Albion Mills(?), age 13, relationship unknown are living with with them. Although enumerated in the same home, both Andrew and Thaddeus are listed as owning real estate. Both are still farming. Listed above, on the same page, is their son Clarkson's wife Melinda (Perkins) Allen and their children living within the household of Hosea Hatch. Clarkson is not living with his family, but appears to be living nearby, enumerated two pages previous, page 10, on line 40. His is 25 years old, owns real estate, and is farming.

1870 Census, Wells, Maine: [6] Judith and Andrew are living in the same home. Their son Ivory, his wife, Mary, and their children: George W. age 9, Ivory age 6, Arthur H. age 4, and Henry P. age 9 months have moved in with them. Andrew's son Thaddeus and family are listed in a separate home next door. Their son Clarkson has passed away, but his widow Melinda (Perkins) Allen and their children are living adjacent. Melinda's widowed mother Sally Perkins is living with her. (See bottom of previous page.)

1872 Map: Andrew Allen and son Thaddeus Brooks Allen property noted on the County Land Ownership Map of 1872 in Wells, York, Maine. See upper left-hand corner, Dist. No. 77, near Sanford and North Berwick boarders. Found here. [7]

Death of Wife: Judith Cole passed away in 1879 per Find A Grave.[8]

1880 Census, Sanford, Maine: [9] Andrew is widowed and living with his son Ivory and family. At age 74, he continues to list his occupation as farmer.

Oak Hill as Family Land: By the 1910 Census, it is clear son Ivory has not moved from where Andrew was living with him in 1880; and that they were living on Oak Hill Road. This part of Sanford appears to have been the home to the extended Allen family for several generations. See pages 20, 26 - 28 and 199- 200 and page 393 in The History of Sanford, Maine, 1661-1900 by Emery. The Robert Allen mentioned appears to be Andrew's great grandfather and Solomon Allen his grandfather with the other parts of the narrative mentioning Andrew's Uncles Jedediah Allen Sr. , Andrew Allen and James Allen. [10] [11]

Death and Burial: 27 Jan 1900, North Berwick, Maine and is buried in the Allen Family Cemetery in Sanford, Maine along with his wife, parents, several children and siblings. [3]

Research Notes

  • Birth and death records are required.
  • Marriage record is required.
  • 1880 Census[9] On same page of census with Andrew and son Ivory are several other families of Allens including two Ephraim Allens. As of 14 Oct 2021 it is unclear to Pam Belanger what, if any, of the relationships may be to Andrew, or his father Ephraim Allen Sr. (1777-1869) or, Andrew's brother Ephraim Allen (1812-1872).
  • Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820, when it voted to secede from Massachusetts to become a separate state. It's not uncommon to find vital records prior to 1820 in the records of the State of Maine. [12]
