At the other end of what became Manitoba’s history is a little-known explorer who captained a crew whose purpose was to locate the North West Passage. Jens Munk, a Norwegian ship’s captain sailing on behalf of the King of Denmark came to grief in the icy waters of northern Manitoba in 1619 and had to winter near what is now Churchill. Among his crew was Rasmus Jensen of the Church of Denmark who conducted the first Lutheran service in Canada.

  1. The Danish Canadian Museum worked on a presentation this past year on Jens Munk as it was the 400th year anniversary of his exploration of Canada. Information can be found at this site and there is an email address for a Danish museum board member for obtaining more information. The museum is in Dickson Alberta and reportedly has a wonderful cafe serving a Danish food. (I know a previous board member.) https://thedanishcanadianmuseum.com/jens-munk-expedition/

I also just found out that The Danish Canadian museum is also offering a trip to Churchill, MB this summer to learn more about Jens Munk. It seems like there are only a few spots left to join the trip, so contact them ASAP (Carl Sorensen at sorensn1@telusplanet.net or (780) 439-7883)
