What an interesting snapshot back in time. The dress has certainly changed - looking at the shoes you can see that they are leather and a lot of laces - built to last. I suppose you would wear those shoes for many many years. The dresses look quite heavy and I suppose that's par for Canadian weather. The farmhouse and the neatly cut grass gives the impression that these folks worked and worked hard.
