January 2020's Example Profiles of the Week Lineup

Hello WikiTreers!

This is the proposed list for Example Profiles for the month of January. These are the profiles we'll feature in the Connection Finder each week. We invite you to weigh in with ideas, to step in and make improvements leading up to their feature date, suggest related profile possibilities, and add to our list of options for future January features.

Some things we need to have for a profile to be featured:

  • Notability.
  • Connected to the Tree.
  • A picture or likeness is available to use for a primary image.

If those things are in place, we can build a biography, though it's a bonus if that's already started or developed as well.

Places we look when planning the EPOW (example profile of the week):

  • Important dates in history (births, deaths, events).
  • Holidays.
  • Media events (history mini-series premieres, dramatizations of novels, biography debuts, movies, new books, etc.).
  • Current events (deaths of important figures, memorial observances).

Here is the January line up:

January 8th: David Bowie (his birth date)

January 15th: Louis Braille

January 22nd: Wilbur Scoville born

January 29th: Christian VII of Denmark

interesting choices, but im a bit disappointed that Isaac Asimov was not chosen, since it´s the 100th aniversary of his birth.
Hi Laura,

We featured Isaac two years ago, and try to use new profiles as often as we can. I am sure he'll be in the list again in the future.
I enjoyed reading these. May I ask how profiles are chosen? Could I make suggestions for future example profiles?
Hello C,

We're glad you enjoy our weekly example profiles. To choose the profiles we look at a number of things: this day in history lists, who is on WikiTree already, profiles projects have sent us they'd like showcased, current events, holidays, recently deceased, and what's happening in popular culture (movies, books, etc).

As far as suggesting future choices, just post them here! I read this thread whenever a new post comes in and add it to a notebook calendar-very old school :-) But I've found it's the easiest way to keep track of everyone. We use categories a bit and a Trello board but my personal primary way of keeping track of future options as well as who we've already used, when, and why, is in my own handwriting.

Thanks for your input!

Abby

Hello Abby, I'd like to suggest the profile of notable Lorraine Hansberry as an example profile. It was started by WikiTree member Sarah Hanko, then I continued it. It's "project protected" but doesn't seem to really be in a project. Hansberry's birthday is in May. She could fit into a "civil rights" theme, or as a writer.

I noticed that many African American notables have under-developed profiles. Maybe there's a project for them somewhere?

Hope you'll find it interesting,

Connie

Hello Connie,

I've added her to my list, though we won't be able to use the profile until she's connected to the main tree. I know there is an African-Americans sub-project, though I don't know where it's housed right now. Otherwise, with a focus on Notables, an African-American Notables sub-project of the Notables project, working with the United States project would be great!

I always like to give it a shot to either create at least one new connection or at a minimum improve the family profiles on these. Most times, I'm able to uncover another link to the global tree - sometimes more. It depends on how well researched these are. We'll see if I have any success or others have any success, too. I'd love to see more people doing the same - adding profiles to these trees and improving upon their connections.

I love this, Scott! If I had more time, I'd be doing the same thing. I do try to check that easy family-everyone mentioned in bios-is added, at least, so further connections can be made.

I happened to visit Louis Braille's birth house yesterday and added detail to his biography from what I learned there. I would be grateful if someone could proofread it. I'll also try to put up a free-space page for Coupvray, his birth village, but I'm not sure it will be ready by Wednesday.
