Collaborative Profile for next Monday. Who? Irish Lineup!

In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, there's an all Irish line-up this week.

1.) Of course we have St. Patrick himself. Don't be fooled by his odd sounding last name.

2.) Irish Poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Yeats-69

3.) Ordinary Irish Guy. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barry-1308 Maybe we should ask: Is anyone who's Irish ordinary?

I'd like to see St. Patrick improved, but I have a few questions:

Ferch/Verch is usually used as the patronymic for "daughter of..." Is there any particular reason he is known as "verch Potitus" instead of "ap Potitus"?

Also, in that time period, why wouldn't he be "ap Calpurnius" directly named for his father if patronymics were in use? Or would he just be "Potitus" in the Roman convention? If it's the Roman convention, why isn't his father a Potitus, too?

Could this name Verch be related to the Bavarian name Versch? I have been looking for a meaning for Versch for many years.
Pontius comes from the Latin meaning bridge. The Pontiff (pope) was a bridge to God. Several latin languages use variants of this.
Erin, we'll have to consult the project on why they named him that. Actually I know Maggie mentioned something about it not being quite right, when I had her find him. I'll email her to ask her to respond

Sharon,

It looks like Potitus might be a variation (or typo) on Potitius, related to the Potitia gens of Roman patrician families

Thank you, Erin!

I have taken another look at Barry-1308. This is going to be a tough one, but if we can get ahold of the Griffith's Valutation and  subsequent Cancellation Books, that would help. Further back, we need the Tithe Applotment Books from the 1820s and 1830s. We aldo need to find what church he attended as there might be baptismal records, even though these were not legal for Catholics before 1829, some do exist. St. Patricks in Skibbereen goes back to the early 1800s with their records, if they will let you have them.

I think it should be ap Calpurnius as well. I did not create this LNAB for the great old Saint Patrick sad.

Maggie, Sharon in the next answer down wants to know if there is a profile for Saint Bridget/Bridgid?

May I upload a shamrock background for St. Patrick's profile please? St. Patrick is  responsible for popularizing the shamrock because he used it to teach about the Holy Trinity.

Yes, If someone else hadn't suggested it, I would have done it myself.
Why not? :-) Let's not forget St. Brigid, though.
Do You have a profile for Brigid? All I know is that she popularized those straw crosses.
Don't know I'll ask Maggie in the next answer up.
Thanks, the Catholics have a lot of info on people who lived a long time ago, and who are remembered for their good behavior and faithful lives. Books about Saints are a good source of profiles from early centuries. Many Saints are on wikipedia too, but some are only known locally. Some may be only mythological, so will take good research to sort them out. Some are angels, and I don't know if angels get profiles here tho. I never heard of any angels having parents!

The WikiTree profile for Saint Brigid links to a WikiPedia's profile for her as she would not have a " genealogy" here at WikiTree,

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Leinster_Province_of_Ireland

See Brigid of Kildare

on the Category page for Leinster.

Some one doing early Europe might want  to make her a profile here unless she already has an wikitree id.

Thanks!
I don't, but I could find one. She was famous for those straw crosses, though. My mother bought one for one of her former teaching colleagues two years ago.
