The County Cork Project and the Collaborative Profile of the Week Present

Sir Fineen "The Rover" O'Driscoll

Fineen O'Driscoll, was a famous British seadog and member of the Irish Clan of O'Driscoll. He has a biography, but it needs some expansion.

  1. Lets start with more sources, and give some more substance to his biography.
  2. Are his parents known?
  3. Wife and children need basic bios and more sources if they are available.
  4. He's not connected to the Global Tree. Can we connect him?
  5. What is he known for?
  6. There's a song about him. A link would be nice? Lyrics?

What would you like to contribute to this week's profile? Please post an answer here first. This prevents duplication of effort and it keeps the question on the front page of G2G.

County Cork Project

County Cork is the southernmost county in Ireland. The main goals of this  sub-project are to find as many people in County Cork Records as possible, make profiles for them, and categorize them by locality. In this way, folks will find it easier to locate their ancestors in County Cork. In addition, we want to analyze the data in easy to read profiles for each ancestor.  We also strive to provide as many links to online resources for County Cork, Ireland, research as possible. We are building space pages for all localities with links to more information about the history, geography, surnames, etc. connected with that locality. We encourage researchers to learn as much as possible about the locality and time period in which their ancestors lived in order to more fully understand their lives.

Thank You

I have been working on his wife's MacCarthy Reagh line and have traced her back to Thomas Fitzgerald, who is profiled on wikitree in a Project Protected Profile. If my wikpedia sources are valid, Fineen O'Driscoll should be connected to the global tree once the system redoes the connections.

I would love to see descendants of Fineen O'Driscoll connected to his profile, and the profiles of his sons and grandsons. The O'Driscoll Clan is huge and mostly concentrated in southwest County Cork in the Baronies of East Carbery and West Carbery. They are so numerous, that they often have the same names, so it will be an interesting puzzle. We once found there were many Patrick Driscoll's born in or near Skibbereen in 1842 with no way to tell them apart.  Perhaps some researchers here have spent time working on the O'Driscoll families? I hope so, because my O'Driscoll ancestors only go back to the early 1800s near Roaring Water Bay. My Burke grandmother's father married a Mary Driscoll, daughter of John O'Driscoll of Lisheen, Augadown.

I would also like to see connections to the MacCarthy family, as my grandfather's sister Ellen  married a William MacCarthy in the early 1900s.

Thank you!

Great job Sharon. And it would be nice to get his sons and grandsons down the line.
Thank you, Anne. I am reading a lot of Irish History to find names of relatives of Fineen. Fineen was involved in several naval battles between the Spanish and the English, in the same waters and the same general time period of the loss of the Spanish Armada in 1588 off the southwest coast of Ireland. Fascinating reading!

I added several more sources to Fineen O'Driscoll's profile that tell about his life as a seadog/pirate for Queen Elizabeth I and his participation in the many battles that occurred on the southwest coast of Ireland between 1573 and 1602.

Hello.

I found the lyrics here, on page 209.

http://scans.library.utoronto.ca/pdf/3/29/treasuryofirishp00broouoft/treasuryofirishp00broouoft_bw.pdf

Apparently it is sung to the air of "The groves of Blackpool"

You can hear "The groves" sung by Jimmy Crowley on the album, Camp House ballads.

That's interesting, but that's not the tune I sing it to, but it's entirely possible it's been sung to more than one tune.

Hi Jack, I'm not sure the Cork County "Project" still exists. I suggest that you contact one of the leaders from the Ireland Project https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland
