Miscategorized Cemetery Question [closed]

In adding the Category Information box to cemetery pages, I ran across this:

Kimmons Cemetery, Adams County, Illinois

It appears to have been categorized to the county instead of Burton, Illinois, which is an unincorporated community.

When I went to rename the category to Kimmons Cemetery, Burton, Illinois, I got a warning that the Burton, Illinois version of the category has previously been deleted by EditBot.

Is it OK to recreate this category, as it does seem like this cemetery should be categorized at this lower level rather than at the county level.

Thanks!

The general guidance is that we do not create CDP (Census Designated Places) categories, and there may have been confusion between a UP (Unincorporated Place) and a CDP since they are lumped together in the same paragraph.

The correct cemetery name would be "Kimmons Cemetery, Burton, Illinois" and listed under "Adam County, Illinois, Cemeteries", with an additional parent of "Burton, Illinois" - so there is no issue in renaming as you identified.

Thank you, Steven!

I was concerned because the category I wanted to create had previously been deleted. Appreciate the guidance. :-)

Quite welcome wink

Reading https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Guidance_for_Creation_of_United_States_Cemeteries says to me that the cemetery was correctly named as it is outside City/Town limits.

Thanks, Darren ... the problem is that the cemetery is located in Burton, Illinois, which -- while unincorporated -- is still a valid location in Adams County.

I am under the impression that unincorporated, census designated, and populated places are not to be used and that if it falls under one of these that it should be listed under the county unless it is within the city limits of a larger town or city.  I am sure Stephen or Natalie will correct this if I am wrong but that is what I got from my conversations and questions about it.

Here's the help page reference for unincorporated places: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Category_Names_for_Regions#US_Unincorporated_Places

I've always understood that it's OK to create a category for them.

UPs are fine to create, as they likely contain legally defined boundaries. The only reason they may not be incorporated is because they do not meet the State's land/and or population requirements.

CDP's on the other hand, do not have legally defined boundaries, and are defined by the Census Bureau for statistical purposes (and are subject to change with any census).

As an example, I live in a CDP. The boundary for this CDP has changed with every census, but generally does not cause any issues since we are a rural community and the boundary expands as the area does. It is like adding onto a house... Still the same house, just growing!
