Honoré d'Estienne d'Orves : naming convention, and connection to the tree

Hello

I created yesterday this profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/D'Estienne_d'Orves-4, and a few relatives, all belonging to "EuroAristo" families but living in the 19th-20th centuries. I have two different questions about this profile.

#1 : Naming convention:

Checking afterwards https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Name_Fields_for_European_Aristocrats, I am aware of having done a mistake in the LNAB which should not contain the initial d'. I made this mistake for this profile and a handful of related ones. I have started to correct this for e.g., https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ollone-4 but for Honoré d'Estienne d'Orves I have a couple of interrogations.

Q1 : Does the naming conventions for Euro Aristo apply the same way to modern profiles (1901-1940)?

Q2 : Should the LNAB be "Estienne" or "Estienne d'Orves"?

#2 : Better connection to the tree.

The profiles I created are connected to the tree via a convoluted path going back and forth in time, passing by my wife and myself, back to one of my obscure illiterate ancestors around 1700 of which one descendant went to America at the end of the 19th century ... which is a bit weird state of affairs. All those French aristocrats could, and certainly shoud  be directly connected by shorter paths to their noble/royal ancestry. I am willing to do that, but what is the best way to proceed? I have identified several potential paths to existing profiles using

http://roglo.eu/roglo?lang=fr;p=honore;n=d+estienne+d+orves;

Any help welcome!

Thank you Bernard, for creating d'Estienne d'Orves's profile.

Concerning the LNAB, you are right that the conventions are less tight for recent profiles than early ones. If I play the purist, I would say use "Estienne" because that is the basic name of the family. Now the d'Orves branch started in the 16th century, which is a long time ago, and in this case "Estienne d'Orves" should be preferred. Honestly, I would leave the name as it is. Take a lot of time to think it over. It might turn out that "d'Estienne d'Orves" is the best option for him in the end. If you are to change this name, remember that it should not be changed more than once, twice maximum, because of redirection problems. I had/have this dilemma with a number of profiles, and even 2 years later, I never know if I made the right choice.

About connexions... Well, I cheat. I go to Geneanet and hunt for some contributors I know to be specialized in them. Then I see what they have. Then I follow their path, but with sources (which Geneanet connectors usually don't have). Sometimes it turns out they are wrong, or some individuals along the path can't be sources according to WikiTree standards, so the connection path doesn't work. I'll take a look at Honoré to see if there are any familiar names there. Having lived in the town next to his birth town for ten years, I should take special care of him.

Thanks Isabelle for the public answer here and personal answers I just got ;-).

I finally changed the LNAB to "Estienne d'Orves", and for related profiles I have done the same and will stick to this rule.
Ahh, no offense but this is nonsense. The family calls itself d'Estienne (not Estienne) d'Orves, do they not? To this day. That's their name.

He has many living descendants. Imagine you were telling them what their name is... because we basically are, and it seems pretty obvious we're getting this wrong. I think this is a case of our standardization/policy getting in the way of reality.

You might as well tell the descendants of the 8th President of the United States, that he was Marty Buren. (He wasn't.)

The naming rules for "European Aristocrats" have been well defined by https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Name_Fields_for_European_Aristocrats, but this is discussed in the other thread you started on this topic. So I won't elaborate here wink
