Question about a source

i hope I’m in the right forum for this question.  Mims-573 is my 3rd great grandfather.  I’m working on finding sources on him.  So far I found some on Family Search.  I don’t know how reliable the IGI is.  Here is what I got:

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, "International Genealogical Index (IGI)," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:97TP-LJS : accessed 1 April 2019), entry for Seaborn Mims; submitted by shamby53896 [identity withheld for privacy]; no source information is available.

Is this an acceptable reference?   Do I just need to keep searching? I don’t mind if I do - I like researching.  Does the church research these facts before they put them in their database?

Thanks!  Karen

If you have an Ancestry account, or access at a local library....you should be able to find some land purchases and some user trees or public documents that can then lead you to some local histories....I just glanced but it might take some searching to find the original documents, one was a Methodist history of some type. His FindAGrave might give some clu, especially for relatives to search. There was only one source on the FamilySearch family tree for him https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9TGV-1L?from=lynx1UIV8&treeref=K2J4-J4L

Thank you. It’s been so long since I’ve worked on my genealogy that I obviously needed reminding. I appreciate it.
That is a gold mine, Kay!

If it is stated that "no source information is available" then a valid source should be found for verification purposes.

Thank you.  I just wanted to check.

There are no standards for IGI inclusion, and the reliability is really, really bad.

You may have better luck looking elsewhere; there appear to be a number of published secondary sources which mention Seaborn Mims.

All of you are just wonderful, Sandra!  I feel so ridiculous for not looking at all these places!  I must have just gone blank yesterday. I appreciate you!
