Question on Merge

I started a merge with Unknown-226453 and Tyrell-41, neither has the correct surname.  I was just put on the trusted list for Tyrell-41.  So do I reject the merge, change Tyrell-41 into the correct surname, then set up the merge with Unknown-226453?  Correct surname is: FitzSimon.

Sounds reasonable. I would place a memo as to what you did in notes, if this would help with the merge trail.

I notice that the change has already been made, and I would request that when asking these questions on G2G time is given for people to answer or comment before making any changes.

I'm also going to be pedantic and say that although the two sources cited name Anne FitzSimon as the first wife of William Tyrell, neither of them actually cite anything to confirm that information.  Nor could I see anything in the two wills that name her by anything other than her first name (though I did just scan the information and could have missed something).

So what is the source for FitzSimon being her Last Name at Birth?

Hi John, here is the place I got the wife of Sir William Tyrrell, p.72, A Display of Heraldry by John Guillim, A Display of Heraldry - John Guillim - Google Books.  Sorry that I got too fast on taking care of that merger, I will take more care next time.

Thanks for this further source, except there is now an issue of who her father was?

The two sources from Oxford Shakespeare, name him as William Fitz Simon or Fitz Simond, and the Display of Heraldry as Sir John Fitz-Simon, Knight.

Both are secondary sources, so it would be valuable to see if there are any primary or original sources that can confirm the father's name.

In cases such as this you should NOT reject the merge unless they actually are different people.

The appropriate course of action, when you know they are duplicates but both LNABs are wrong, is to correct the LNAB on the profile you are trusted with, and then, if it is approved (by default or not), complete the merge into that profile. The merge proposal stays valid even when the LNAB of one of the sides gets changed, or if one side of a proposal gets merged into yet another duplicate.

So you can change the LNAB of a trusted profile, even after a merge has been proposed?    Also, what if you have two profiles, one is unknown and the other has the husband's surname, I'm thinking if the person's surname is unknown you'd keep the unknown, rather then the husband's surname?
Unknown should be used, if maiden name is unknown and only the married name is known.

Proposing a merge just sets the status, edits, etc can be done on both profiles until the merge is completed.  If you select to do the merge after approvals are done, you should always 'compare again' the profiles to make sure they still are the same person.  Frequently, changes are made so they no longer match.  I had proposed a merge between 2 profiles that were the same, but the PM changed both profiles with dates, parents, etc, and then rejected the merge saying they had different parents!!  Of course, that is not what they looked like when the proposal was made, but that is part of why there is a wait time before the Proposed Merge will get default approval, also.

Change the LNAB on the profile you're trusted with before you complete the merge, it creates less convoluted branches than if you change it after the merge.

You just don't have to reject the merge proposal; the system remembers it was there before the name change.
And yes, unknown for the wife as LNAB is better than her husband's LNAB.
