Prefixes. What's correct?

I have a profile where the individual was a Senator and a military officer, in this case an Honourary Colonel.  The prefex for a Senator is The Honourable or just Hon. The prefix for an Honourary Colonel. is HCol.  He also held the rank of Brigader General so BGen. is also appropriate.

I chose to call his BGen. Hon. mainly because the military rank is important to me.  Is this correct?

I'm still trying to figure out what the suffix "VD" means.  He holds a Russian Order as well.

You also should removed the punctuation from BGen, Hon.

It should read simply BGen Hon

Although, if he were a retired Brigadier .. then Brig Gen (or BGen) ret might work as a suffix.  (I'm not sure how the American military system does it.)

He's Canadian.  Thanks very much.
Well, ok, I know even less about the Canadian military!  (I'm an Aussie and I like our search and find.  It gives everything, if it has been digitalised.)
Hi Melanie, your advice applies in Canada too.  My father looked it up before adding it to his calling card (yes, he has a card!)  He is Maj ret

I would just choose the highest honor or title. The rest can be explained in the biography.

For my profiles I used the title they would have been called and spell out the rest in the biography. I am American, so it would be different, but I put Lieutenant for either a first or second Lieutenant. Sergeant. General.

When I was in the Army a Brigadier General was abbreviated as BG. Probably no one else would get that abbreviation.

VD : Volunteer Officer’s Decoration

From Debrett's Letters after the name

Crown honours follow immediately after the abbreviations ‘Bt’ (baronet) and ‘Esq’ (if applicable). If an individual has more than one set of letters after their name, the letters should appear in this order:
