Would it be possible to create and new external link to Austin Families Association of America?

https://www.afaoa.org/getperson.php?personID=I20&tree=RobertRI

 {{AFAOA|I20|RobertRI|1/13/2019|Robert Austin}}

<nowiki>{{AFAOA|I20|RobertRI|1/13/2019|Robert Austin}}</nowiki>

look something like-

I believe you are requesting an External Link Template, Patricia.

You should add the tag for templates to your question.

I believe you want a link that takes you directly to the Profile Page of Robert Austin. It seems you need to be a member to get to the exact page you want as the url you supplied only brings you to the Login Screen of AFAOA. You'll notice WikiTree only recognizes a portion of the url as a viable url as the underline denoting it is a url stops after the first = sign. The 120&tree=RobertRI is not recognized as proper url formatting.

If this is a site that requires membership fees, a direct link to data on that site may not be possible.  This is the problem with Ancestry records with urls or the new {{Ancestry Record|###|###}} template.  If you're not a member, you can't view them.
I wanted an external link template. Reply to David Selman.
Yes you do need to have a user name and password for this site. But it is a free site. So once you login, you stay logged in for a session. You can return again and again.  I guess I don't  understand why one can not be created, as there are several for ancestry.com.
Yes Patricia there are those for Ancestry, but if you are not a member, you can't view them.  FamilySearch is also a free site that requires membership to search, but its urls permit non-members to view them.  This is why many members like FamilySearch over Ancestry because it is so easy for the person viewing a Profile to see the actual source data. AFAOA seems to be a mix of those two, while it is a free site, unless you are a member, you can't view the data.  Every site has different rules on access.

To attempt to see if I could figure out something for you regarding AFAOA I just joined it to see its operation.  Filled out the info requested and now I have to wait to be approved.  So not the easiest or quickest way to see any data referred from them.  So we'll just have to wait till I get approval to see if I can figure something out for you.

One thing about the Ancestry template, even though non members are blocked from viewing the data so many WikiTree members do have Ancestry accounts and so many Profiles have sources from Ancestry, it was created more of a convenience.  Of the 19 million Profiles on WikiTree probably 10 million have an Ancestry source listed.  And it was more than likely created to clean up the nasty way Ancestry sources can look too.  LOL

FamilySearch is also a free site that requires membership to search, but its urls permit non-members to view them.

.

Are you sure about that?

I have yet to see any link from familysearch.  It always asks for a login; something I cannot do as the account I made with them specifically so I COULD view their links is unusable due to them declaring my alphanumeric password is a surname and disallowing the attempt to log in.  My "case" has been "pending" for about 2 months.  I've given up even trying.

Melanie, have you tried resetting your FamilySearch password using the “Forgot password” link? Called them?
Got my membership Patricia and copied your supplied url to a word processor to try using ASCII encoding to possibly see if that would work and darned if it didn't work there.  Margaret is married to Pasco who is Robert's brother.

So it appears to be possibly a problem with Wiki Mark Up recognizing that as a properly encoded url.  I tried swapping out some characters with ASCII codes and no go. So this one is beyond my now limited coding skills.

By the way, neat site and I see why you bemoan its unavailability to viewers.  If I could create you a template I would.

No in that form. External Link Template, is a template just for the link. The date and name part don't belong to the link. Also inline citation suggested in Answer shouldn't be used as part of a template.

It will probably be similar to FindAGrave one

* {{AFAOA|I20|RobertRI}} for Robert Austin Retrieved 1/13/2019,...

But otherwise this is a good candidate for template. I will create account to see what can be linked to.

I will also scan wikitree profiles for www.afaoa.org links.

You are the man Aleš!!!!

I checked the Bioses and link to afaoa is used 504 times.

12 times to their new structure: https://www.afaoa.org/getperson.php?personID=Ixxx&tree=yyy

the others point to their old structure http://www.afaoa.org/db_files/yyy/Individuals/Ixxx.html

and return 404 error.

I can provide the list of links if you want to correct them to new template.

I could even program EditBOT to do it.

Now back to template. I prepared the template.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:AFAOA
Can someone make an estimate on the future site usage? at the moment, we have 500 links.

Here are all profiles with link to AFAOA site.

http://www.softdata.si/wt/AFAOA_0.htm

and with relatives.

http://www.softdata.si/wt/AFAOA-relatives_0.htm

I corrected the first one as an example.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beach-221

It seems that database names changed (Richard_Austin_MA -> RichardMA) so EditBOT can't do the conversions. Users will have to do it.
