Why?

Trove already offers several acceptable citations to copy and paste.

Hi, Melanie! It's actually not for use as a citation. As with the other external link templates, it helps if the URL format ever changes. Az :)

My understanding from Trove (National Library of Australia) is that the links they include are perma-links.  (Of course, we have heard that from other sites, as well.)

Sorry Azure but I agree with Melanie that a template for Trove is not necessary.

In relation to citing Trove, when using one of the formats provided, it's often worth adding a search term

?searchTerm=xxxx

to the URL so that the relevant part of the article is highlighted and centred. For example, if you were interested in Carl Wachtmann, you could use something like

<ref>Family Notices (1870, December 24). ''Adelaide Observer (SA : 1843 - 1904)'', p. 2. Retrieved May 12, 2022, from National Library of Australia Trove [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/158942345?searchTerm=Wachtmann 158942345].</ref>

To see the result, try the link

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/158942345?searchTerm=Wachtmann

- Likewise - thank you Melanie -

Thanks for everyone's input.

As stated above this was not a request for a citation, but an external link template. So, instead of placing the markup for the link, i.e. [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/213241165 Link]
the template markup would be added
{{Trove
|213241165}}

As with the other external link templates, it helps if the URL format ever changes.

For an example, see the Newspapers.com external link template.

But the Library of Australia links are supposed to be perma links.
I still see no need for a template (and would not use it if there were one), unlike the one created for the Australian National Archives as the results of those searches were session-locked and resulted in timeout errors if the results links were used.
Yes, thanks, Melanie! I had meant to close this out back in May.

I agree with Melanie and Jim. I see no need to add unnecessary format complications. We already have so many choices to fulfill our pedantries. So many different ways to present information...

I also agree with Melanie and use the citations provided regularly. Its time saving and less fiddly, and accurate.
