What's in a name? Clovis or Clarice Paris

Hail.

Over the last few days the first name of Clovis Paris here has been a point of contention. Not on Wikitree. Nope. It seems people have taken issue with the name on Familysearch and have stated her name is Clarice when it's clearly Clovis. I try to explain things. Doesn't always work.

So, I was wondering if people could help me settle it once and for all. Their reasoning is that it's on baptismal and records of a son who lived in Michigan. I'm like "Wouldn't they have translated it?" His name was apparently Adolph Dussault.

One small problem. Adolph was born AFTER his mother's death. He was born in May 1854 and died May 17th, 1944 in Schoolcraft Michigan. His marriage records don't list Clovis as a parent either.

So, I don't think that was their kid. Still unsure of the name issue. I hope someone can help out.

Looks like they may have confused him with another Adolph. Looking into it. There was another Adolph who fits in with his mother's life. Born 1835. Died: 1925.

This guy apparently lived in Lake Linden, Michigan.

Hi

It's not that easy to read her second given name.

In her baptism record, I could read Clorice but base on the way it's written in the margin, I would say Clovie.

In her marriage record, I read Clovie. Yet, to be honest, I see very little difference between his r in Marie and the v in Clovie.

In her burial record, I read Clovis

Edouard DUSSEAULT remarried in 1840.

In this record, his first wife is named the late Clovis PARIS.

You're a legend! I hope I can find out what happened to their daughter, Rose Flavie. I don't have a death date for her. But, that's a separate thread.
It seems that her given name was Clovis and that the family probably did not pronounce the last letter.

I wonder why they gave her that very given name. Was it a popular name in those times ? Kind of funny that her grandmother was called Clotilde (Clotilde was the wife of Clovis, first king of the Franks).

David, name might have been given by the godparents, frequent practice of the times, in which case go figure where it comes from.  laugh

I noticed that when I put everyone in ages ago.

the baptism clearly reads Marie Clovie in Drouin collection, comparing the V in Avril with the name, and how the priest wrote his Rs elsewhere.  https://www.genealogiequebec.com/Membership/LAFRANCE/img/acte/2912430 Drouin copy (subscription required)

Funeral also lists her as Marie Clovis  https://www.genealogiequebec.com/Membership/LAFRANCE/img/tag/d1p_16550988.jpg Drouin

Marriage reads Marie Clovie from what I can make out comparing letters.  https://www.genealogiequebec.com/Membership/LAFRANCE/img/tag/d1p_16550869.jpg Drouin (page 2 of the record)
