Honor Code, point 4

I know how much we all enjoy the open communication G2G provides to all of us. A talker like me really loves it! It truly is one of the grandest features of WikiTree.

Communication when we are not face-to-face can be fraught with a unique set of difficulties. We cannot see facial expressions, hear the voice. We also cannot know everything that's going on in peoples’ lives, much less the psychological make-up of folks who post, nor how life has dealt out intelligence to anyone.

I hope we will all make allowances for all of these and other factors in our communication. While Honor Code 4 is talking about misunderstandings, I think it can also apply to people who appear to be posting what we think are inane questions, incomplete queries, and the such. We are to be courteous, even to those who don't act accordingly.

I know it sometimes takes the patience of Job to deal with all kinds of people. Certainly, my career in government work taught me to work to understand people who didn't think the same as me or had less competence in a particular area.

When I've posted something that was off the wall or misunderstood a WikiTree style or procedure, I have been treated with the utmost patience and courteousness. I may have felt a little foolish about something I should have known better, but I never in one instance felt like I was being ridiculed or put down. This is another one of the reasons I love this community. We are are community who cares not only for excellence in genealogy, but for each other, as genealogists and as people.

In our world, this is uncommon, and it is beautiful!

Edit: typo OCD!

Thank you, Pip, for the reminder. We all have our days, but following Honor Code 4 is what makes WikiTree such a nice place to be --- filled with helpful and encouraging friends and family.

Thank you Pip, a very eloquently written reminder of what we are about. When I first joined Wikitree, I was quite wary of posting anything, because i had received bad experiences on other forums, when posting a question which others felt silly.

When I did pluck up the nerve, my questions was responded to pleasantly and with heaps of valuable info.We have THE BEST community here:)

Happy holidays everyone :)
