What causes photos to be locked?

Subject of profile is not locked, and I uploaded a photo, but then it is not even in the list of images on the lower right part of the profile page, or on the image page. Turns out the photo itself has a locked symbol. So I requested and got trusted status for the profile, but photo is still locked.I wanted this photo to be shared with others who view the profile! Work around?

That's a very good question, Diane - that photo should not be private, as far as I can tell.  I looked at the Change pages for the profile and see that you uploaded it and I also see that the profile's privacy level is Open.  I also checked the image and see that it is private.

Please edit your question and add the tag:  bugs  to it, so that it will be brought to the attention of someone from the tech team.  They're the ones who will need to address this!

For the workaround you asked about, if you create a free space page to store image files, then do not connect them to profiles but use the image template to display the image in the biography, as long as the free space page is open (white) or public (green), the image will display in any profile that has public biography, even if the profile's level is private.  Here's how the image template looks:

{{Image
|file = filename (such as LeBlanc-3570-2.jpg
|size =
400 (the width to display the image, in pixels - play with it)
|align =
c (could be l for left, c for center or r for right)
|caption =
what you want to appear under the image (optional)
}}

Wow, I find all that coding complicated. But meanwhile I learned something about this problem: in the process of loading a different photo to an unrelated profile I noticed a green unlock at the top of the page. When I edited the photo page to take out the person's name (because he really wasn't pictured in the photo), the lock changed to red. When I added the person back in, it became green again. So apparently you cannot leave "in this image" blank and keep it unlocked.

I then tricked the system into giving me access to the locked photo that started all this by trying to upload it again. I added the name back as a person in the image, and now it is unlocked. Weird.
Diane, I think what you saw is what happens when there are no profiles that the image is connected to.  That's in preparation for the image being deleted.  I agree that it is confusing to see a red lock on it.

Don't worry too much about the coding - just copy/paste everything starting with {{ and ending with }} and then put in the information I indicated - it's magic!

You cannot customize the privacy level of a photo. Access to images is dependent on the Privacy Level of the profiles on which they appear and whether you are on the Trusted Lists of those profiles. Here are more details. See the Photos FAQ for more general information about images on WikiTree.
