I discovered a collection of Nebraska Adjutant General Reports ranging roughly from about 1883 - 1939 at the Access Nebraska website. Besides listing the General Orders for the specific time frame of each report, the ones I searched all had a nice roster at the end.

Found here:

Main search page is here:

There are also banking, insurance, Governors, agricultural, railroad etc reports available.  The service is free and you can search by surname if you want to.

I recently acquired a book entitled "Buffalo County Nebraska in the World War, 1917, 1918, 1919"  It appears to have been published locally about 1919.  It contains short biographies and photographs of all the men and women who served in a capacity as a solider or a civilian or were part of a civilian supporting group/agency during World War I.  Everyone who has a biography in the book has some kind of Buffalo County, Nebraska connection but, as I've discovered as I started working on biographies for those who died in the War, they didn't necessarily live in Buffalo County. The link is usually their parents.

I didn't see anywhere that this particular book was available online, so if anyone would like me to do a look up just send me a PM.

I also have a physical copy of the 1st Infantry Division history book and two University of Nebraska Cornhusker Annuals published during the World War I that contain some very useful short biographies for soldiers.

Thanks for that great source! I think we should add it to the Military and War  Project. We have recourse pages by war but we may need to create some by state. The Civil War Project has resource pages by state and they took a lot of work. Since we will need them for across time and not a specific war, we could collaborate with the states subprojects of the US History Project that are interested and they can be linked to both projects!  I like this idea. Thanks again for contributing such a great source!

The Nebraska Access site would also be great resource for the US History Project as it relates to Nebraska, there are railroad reports, prison reports, Agricultural Reports and State mental hospital reports that all looked like they might have some decent information in them.

One other Nebraska source that is free to use that might be good to add to both lists is the UNL Newspaper Archive located here:

I have noticed some great old obituaries for Civil War veterans.  Some of the newspapers I've run into date back 1870-1899.  A lot of Civil War Veterans came out to Nebraska to claim Homesteads.

Are there any sources for the Nebraska State Navy? In the early 60's my father, a real Navy officer, was made an Admiral is said Navy. I'm wondering if the state owes him any back pay. This is said with tongue in cheek, although the honor was real, the NSN isn't.

Great find Sondra. Thanks for sharing.

"And I [the Governor of Nebraska] do strictly charge and require all officers, seamen, tadpoles and goldfish under your command to be obedient to your orders as Admiral—and you are to observe and follow, from time to time, such directions you shall receive, according to the rules and discipline of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska."

A bit of humor from the Governor's office.  I think it is still considered Nebraska's highest honor awarded to a citizen of the State by the Governor. :)
