In case you're researching Hall County, NE. Hall County, seated in Grand Island, is located in central Nebraska. Several Hall County organizations collaborated to create the Hall County Newspaper Digitization Project. The collection comprises nearly 321,000 pages from 161 newspapers. The majority of the digitized pages are from 23 titles, which include The Grand Island Daily Independent (1885-1930), Wood River (1884-2003), The Cairo Record (1907-2012), Grand Island Independent (1882-1912), The Doniphan Herald (1923-2005), Grand Island Anzeiger Un Herald (1894-1918) (German), West Nebraska Register (1987-2020), The Nebraska Register (1947-1973), and The Grand Island Herald (1918-1942). The databases are keyword searchable and can also be browsed. As posted by Valerie Beaudrault in The Weekly Genealogist by American Ancestors, February 21, 2024

Oh, my goodness, Beth! This is some awesome information. Thanks for the post!

I love to dig into digitized newspapers. I'll make sure it gets added to the Hall county NE page.
You're most welcome, Judi! Thanks for adding it to the Hall County, NE page and for all that you do.
Thank you, Beth!

OK, folks, each contribution has been tallied, and here are the stats. During this challenge:

*21 out of 28 who signed up created new profiles.

*1008 profiles were affected (meaning created or improved).

*130 more profiles have the "Nebraska Sticker".

*206 profiles were created by

# Cindy (Ring) Hanrahan ... the most by a single Wikitreer in the Nebraska births category.

*95 profiles were created by
# Connie Goos ... the most by a single Wikitreer in the Nebraska deaths category.

The Wikitreer who added the most Nebraska Stickers was
#Diane Scholten ... with 43 "Nebraska Sticker.

*6 Wikitreers completed the challenge! They are:

# Diane Scholten
# Susan Drabbels Roberts
# Victoria English
# Jen McDougall
# Audrey (Hoppes) Martin
# JoAnn Brown

...and the winner is all of those profiles that were created and/or improved upon that now look better than ever associated with the great state of Nebraska!

Anyone who signed up for this challenge and wants a sticker for their profile, please private message me.

Thank you for participating!

Hi Judi -

Gosh, I added well over 100 Nebraska Stickers and don't see my name on the list of participants - did I do something wrong?

Hi Diane,

Oops, I think I see the problem... I think you've confused the "Nebraska State Seal".gif with the Template Wikitree uses for the Nebraska Sticker. Nebraska Sticker needs to  be applied under the == Biography == header. If you want to update those profiles by copying and pasting in the Nebraska Sticker  (also include the two curly brackets, too, at the front and back) and let me know when you're done, then I can run the query on WikiTree+ again that looks for the template in the biography and will amend your count. smiley

Thanks - I was so upset I couldn't fall asleep last night!  I worked hard!  Before I amend the 100+ that I did wrong, would you check my work on my Mother and make sure I have it right?  Should I take out the picture I added on all the others?

Here's mom:  https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Glasgow-730&errcode=saved
Yes, mom's profile looks good with the Nebraska Sticker in place.

Yes, remove the *.gif because it's not applicable on person profiles.

I don't know if you are contributing to the Connect-a-thon this weekend, but if you are, catch up with me on this next Saturday so we can true up your counts. :)
I got all 121 of them cleaned up tonight.  If you could re-run and let me know I'd most appreciate it!
Hi Judi!  Hope you had a great Connect-a-Thon!  Let me know what you find when you re-run the Nebraska Day challenge - I think I fixed all 121 of my people!

***Special Announcement***

The USBH challenge to create new profiles of African Americans from the 1880 US Census during February's Black History Month is partnering with the Nebraska Days Challenge.

So if you want to be a part of the Nebraska Days challenge, but don't know where to start or don't have any ancestors from Nebraska, this would be a great entry point for you to join in the fun!

Thanks, Judi. We are thrilled to be partnering with you for this challenge.
My Great Grandfather Benjamin Franklin Brown (1844-1888) was the first elected county clerk in Perkins County, NE and died shortly after giving his acceptance speech at the young age of 44. He had already been active in NE politics as he and his family moved across the state from IA. I'll see what else I can add to his profile, though it might not meet the actual challenge requirements.
Thanks for the post! How interesting!!
I already started working on Nebraska USBH profiles when i saw this challenge earlier.

A lot are connected.
Connections are sometimes tough but important. Thanks for your work on the USBH Project and thanks for posting!

You can go to this link USBH 1880 Project and click on Nebraska in the table to get to the Google spreadsheet with names to work on. There are 2 tabs for Nebraska. The spreadsheet automatically opens to the instructions tab.

A quick update, we created 362 new Nebraska profiles during last weekend's sprint and we're now up to 584 of the 2333 profiles needed to complete the 1880 census.

That's amazing Emma and because we still have 2+ weeks to go for this challenge, It seems as though your goal might be completed by April 5th.

Delighted to join!  I was born in Nebraska, as were my mother, maternal grandfather, maternal great-grandpaents, and maternal great-great-grandparents.  I'm writing a book about Gil & Sarah Glasgow, my maternal great-great grandparents and have done extensive research on my Glasgow, Majors and Peery lines in Nebraska.  this will be fun!  Most of my peeps are in Nemaha County and/or Omaha.

A few questions:

- do living people count?

- If I add someone who was both born and died in Nebraska does she/he count in categories 1 and 2 or only one or the other?

- I'm assuming that the answer to the above is separate, and I would guess that the 5 new biographies is also separate, ya?

- is there some easy way to find Nebraska-related profiles that are missing dates, or should I just troll through my Nebraska people and look one by one?

thanks!
by Diane Scholten G2G6 Mach 1 (14.4k points)
New biographies should be on Nebraska-related profiles that were previously created but have none.

Living people count, but if they have the most restrictive privacy where their location can not be viewed, they can't be counted.

Any new profiles you create should contain all of the elements this challenge is asking for so sources, bio, stickers, category, and a connection.

To locate Nebraska profiles with no dates, login to Wikitree+ https://plus.wikitree.com/default.htm   Run error reports (131/ 132/133/134) based on the word "Nebraska" in the text field.
Thank you!  Regarding your third paragraph - I understand the need for sources, bio, stickers, connection.  But is the category "born/died"?

That is - can I add 5 people who were born in NE but may have died elsewhere; 5 who died in NE but were born elsewhere?

Just trying to understand!  My going in thought is to create 20 new people to cover all bases and then update 15 to cover all sources.

Thank you for helping me!
A category can be the cemetery they were buried in, or the county/state they were born in, a city they resided in.

Born and/or died is fine. Or someone associated to Nebraska in history, lived there or went to school there or worked there, too, is also fine.

Ultimately, you will create 10 new complete profiles and connect them and improve 5 other profiles and connect them.
Judi - that's perfect!  Very clear!  Glad I cleared up the category bit - I had been working on a cemetery in Peru, Nebraska - adding that category (Mt Vernon Cemetery) to all the people I know of buried there so I don't know why it didn't spring to mind.  I'm excited about this challenge!  Thanks for all you help!

I will do some Nebraska African Americans this weekend. I added a dozen or two profiles from Nebraska in the Feb USBH Challenge; I think I took care of Lincoln County, which is where many of my Rowson/Hineline/Klabunde kin lived in 1800s/1900s (and some still there).
by S Davis G2G4 (4.5k points)
Sounds good. This challenge is 10+ new complete profiles and 5 improved profiles. Can be born and/or died in Nebraska or related to Nebraska in some way.

I have completed 6 of 7 tasks. I still need to do “Compile new biographies for 5 Nebraska-related profiles”.

Though I intend to keep adding family members throughout the challenge, and especially adding info to existing profiles and adding the seal, I believe I have completed all the challenges set forth.  Is there a way we will know we have met the goals?
by Diane Scholten G2G6 Mach 1 (14.4k points)
Generally, if you have created at least 10 new profiles related in some way with Nebraska and improved 5 other Nebraska profiles someone else created, and added stickers to those 15 profiles, then you probably completed the challenge.

After April 5th, I'll check to see officially if the challenge was completed, but from your post, it sounds like you're looking for a progress check. I can probably put one together by the end of this weekend.
Ah, 10 NEW profiles - nah, I don't have that done yet!  Have a LOT of improved ones.  Nope, I think I'm good, I'll just keep trucking along and will add 8 more new profiles to get myself to 15 on that so I'm sure I've got it covered.  This is fun!  TY!

Please explain how we connect 5 profiles to the global wiki tree, I think I'm doing well on everything else.

I did find a Nebraska death record at:

archive.org/details/NE_Death_Index_-_1904-1955

It was a little confusing how to access the records but finally figured it out. I spent a lot of time and I'd be willing to look for people in Ne who died prior to 1955. Maybe this is a simpler task than I'm thinking but if I had problems, maybe someone else did too. Susan Roberts

A connected profile will not have a puzzle piece at the end of their name if when created, their profiles was associated to a relative who was already connected. An example would be a parent- child relationship and the parent is already connected through their tree.

If you are using the "Add" function to start a new profile, they won't be connected until you continue to create profiles and eventually link to a profile that is already connected.

I hope that makes sense.

For records, many use familysearch. It's free. Find-a-Grave.com is also a good free site.
