Happy New Year Ontario Project members!

The recategorization of Ontario’s locations continues. If you see a place of birth or death changed on one of your profiles and “Recategorization of Ontario categories in process” or “Added category: Ontario Project categorization of early settlers” in the “Explain your changes” box, here’s the reason. We are simplifying the location categories so that they are easier to find. Once this is done, you’ll be able to check the “Punkeydoodle, Upper Canada” category under “Punkeydoodle” rather than “Town of Punkeydoodle” and find your ancestors’ neighbours or even possible family members. While working on the categories, we are linking early families if we see a connection that hasn’t been made.

Another change you may notice: the Notable Ontarians template is being replaced with a sticker (thanks, Mags). Ontarian Sticker The Ontario Project is a sub-project of the Canadian History Project, so we should be using a sticker rather than a project template.

And as a bonus to members, and to force me out into the cold, if you find a source on the Toronto Reference Library website that you would like me to consult, please private email me and I’ll put on my woollies and venture out. I need to do some research there myself, so you'd be doing me a favour!

Please continue to add sources to our Resources section and let us know what you've been up to and any suggestions for our project that you may have.

Thanks,
Laurie (Project Coordinator)

I've recently joined the project and so far I've been trying to expand the trees of the current notables. I also made some profiles I would like to add to the notables - e.g. Dr. Emily Howard Stowe (1st female Canadian doctor and more), Dr. Charles Best, etc. How do I add someone to the notables? Can I just put the sticker? Or do they need to be in the project list first? Also any suggestions for areas to focus on is good. thanks!

You're doing some wonderful work, Tanya. Thanks so much. The sticker is a bit up in the air at the moment. Please add one of the subcategories above the Biography heading for now and we'll put the sticker on later. For example, would  be suitable for Best. You can also add your notables to the Free Space page for Notable Ontarians. As for areas to focus on, the politicians are well covered, but the others aren't, so take your pick!

Got it fixed-up - the Sticker.

Ontarian

Ontario Business Figures

The Verbiage after the pipe "|" is the category.

Mags

Thanks, Mags! Will put the directions on the project page.

Whoops! This works for Ontario Business Figures but if I type in Ontario Architects, the category remains Ontario Business Figures on the profile. See John Howard. Do you need to set up a sticker for each sub-category?

Hey Laurie - Let me grab some higher knowledge on the Sticker Parameters...

Mags

Thanks again. If you need to direct the "Higher Power" to what we need, please ask them to look at the War of 1812 sticker, which allows you to put in the regiment, which then appears as the category. For example, profile of John Chisholm.

No higher power needed...just to wipe away the Monday morning haze? Got it set-up...here ya go. The 1812 Sticker is more complex than what we need.

Great, can I ask for one more tweak, please, on this gloomy Mon. morning. This is what the text reads on the sticker for John Howard: John (Corby) Howard is/was a significant Ontarian and a Ontario Architects notable .

Can we please say "an Ontario Architects notable" and can we delete the space between the last word and the period. Isn't the sticker supposed to nest in the text once you put it under the Biography heading? Right now it floats above the first line of the text. I can't help it. It's that picky publishing background.

What's the syntax for the sticker?

Ontarian Sticker

Okay, Ontarian Sticker got me a red link, but Ontarian Sticker got me the sticker.

Hmmm... but Ontario_Business_Figures still puts William Neilson into the Notable Ontarians category instead of into the Ontario Business Figures category. Is it possible to edit the Ontario Sticker so we can pass parameters to it and put people into the right subcategory?

Thanks! Since you're online, Greg, on the category page for Notable Ontarians I couldn't add Ontarian Sticker without it showing the sticker itself. How does one indicate the code without it becoming the sticker?
Whoops, messages crossed. Yeah, long story. I'm hoping people will use the sub-categories as directed on the category page. We will end up with a super list and the sub-categories. See what I've done on Neilson.
Thanks for fixing that.
I see what you did on Neilson. The problem with the sticker as it stands is that it automatically puts the person in "Notable Ontarians", so even if we put in a sub-category (like, in his case, "Ontario Business Figures", they end up being categorised twice in the same hierarchy, which is a no-no in the Categorization Project. What we need is some way for profiles to have the sticker, but be categorised in the appropriate sub-category.
Please ask Mags. The War of 1812 project has a sticker that works in the way that you're suggesting. Perhaps they could help.
Thanks for the email heads-up - No Haven't heard from Greg...working on it. I have to set it up Greg or no matter what you put in it won't work.

Mags
And here it is: Ontarian Sticker.
Thanks Laurie!

Thank you for all your hard work on the Ontario categories!! Multiple people have tried to tame that beast since regional categories are created. :)

Thanks, Lianne. Other members are working on it, too. For me, it's become yet another WikiTree addiction!
