Genealogy of the Pelton Family of America ( https://archive.org/details/genealogyofpelto00pelt ) page 59 says that John Pelton Jr. was married 1756 (at Saybrook) to his second wife Martha Shipman "of Chester", Connecticut.  They named their first son Joseph and also had a daughter Priscilla, so the best match seems to be Martha Shipman (daughter of Joseph and sister of Priscilla) of Chester.  She is Shipman-381.

However, Shipman-32 makes her daughter of Abraham Shipman and Ruth Butler.  She was born in Saybrook, not Chester, so is not such a good match.  So is The Pelton Family of America correct that it was Martha Shipman of Chester (even though they give her father's name as John instead of Joseph)?  In any case, Martha married 2nd to Joseph Bishop.

P.S.  The youngest child of John Pelton Jr. and Martha Shipman was born in 1779.  This would have been when Martha Shipman (of Joseph) was 44 years old.  Martha Shipman (of Abraham) would have been 56 years old, so that is another argument against Shipman-32.

I have concluded that Genealogy of the Pelton Family of America (page 59) is correct that John Pelton Jr. was married to Martha Shipman of Chester (Shipman-381), even though they mistakenly said her father was named John (instead of Joseph).

I have therefore disconnected the other Martha Shipman (Shipman-32) as his spouse, and connected Shipman-381 instead.  Shipman-32 would have been far too old (66 years old) to have been the mother of the youngest child (as well as some of the other siblings).  This also explains why they named a son Joseph (and also a daughter Priscilla).

Thank you for your research!

John Pelton, Jr and his second wife Martha Shipman had a daughter who married Private Samuel Simmons.  The couple removed from Connecticut to Lyme, New Hampshire & he served in the American Revolution.  Connected today 14 NOv 2019; recommended a merge; hooray for WikiTree!
