Jersey Archives

I'm away on the beautiful island of Jersey, in the Channel Islands, for a few days visiting family, and had the day free today. I thought, 'I know, I'll go and visit the Jersey archives!' Spurred on by a recent trip to Scotland to archives in Glasgow and Edinburgh I followed my sat nav along the streets of St Helier and finally found where I was looking for. One problem. This is the one week in the year when they are closed for stocktaking!!! Le sigh. This could only have happened to me. Or are there other's out there who have made long trips only to find the building closed or the archives moved? What other roadblocks have you encountered which hindered you from finding what you were looking for? Susie :-)

I had a somewhat similar experience at the Mercer County Historical Society/Museum, with the notable exception that a volunteer there on that day allowed me look at their obituary file.

I found my grandfather's obituary that I did not know existed!

Wow, what a lovely volunteer and what a gem of a find! :-)

I went to find the grave of a great-aunt who died as a small child.  The town where she was buried was a few hundred miles away, and there was only one train there in the morning and one back in the evening.  When I got there, she had no headstone, so I found a cemetery clerk who pointed at a patch of grass and said "Six feet from that one on the left, and six feet from that one on the right - there she is."

Aww. That's really sad. Makes me wish we could club together and get a gravestone for her.
