Can anyone help with an ancestor born in Virginia Colony around 1796?

Elizabeth is a third Great-grandmother to me. She emigrated from Virginia to Louisiana with her husband William Rowan. They settled among the Acadians of St. Martin Parish and their children married Acadians. I am stuck on what her surname might be. Here are some of the spellings I've found so far. Ocremont, Oeremeant, Occro-man, Ocromen; O'Cromen, AKamane, Ackmann, DeRemeant, Riman, Bethsy O'Conner, Eckert, Wekerm.

It would be wonderful to find out when and how this family emigrated to Virginia. We do know her parent's names (sorta--spelling thing). I would appreciate help from the Immigration and Virginia experts.

Another question. Would William Rowan be an English name?

In 1796, Virginia Colony was already the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States.  It had been part of the United States since 1776,,,
oops sorry, I knew that

Thanks Wendy, On the profile, you can see that I did find that. What I am looking for is what her surname really is. Occroman isn't exactly it. On the profile you can see how the various french and english priests and census takers interpreted what she told them her name was. I suspect it's Irish.

I don't quite know what you mean by this sentence: "I am stuck on what her surname might be.

Are you saying you don't know what nationality her surname might be?

Because if you're trying to determine the "correct spelling" of her surname in 1796, I'm sure there is no such thing.

I don't know her country of origin. I am looking for some linguists who can look at the entries and determine, based upon the country of origin of the transcriber and the way her name was written, what her name might be. There is a wide disparity between Occroman and AKamane and Everman. Elizabeth would have given her name but someone else would have written her name as they heard it. Ocremont, Oeremeant, Occro-man, Ocromen; O'Cromen, AKamane, Ackmann, DeRemeant, Riman, Bethsy O'Conner, Eckert, Wekerm, are some spellings in the records found in Virginia and Louisiana.

which ones (spelling variations) are specifically found in Virginia. What is the earliest record of them in Virginia. Who were her parents.
of course  I could just look at her profile! Too early not enough coffee.
Right, that is posted on her profile.

I found this on a message board. This researcher seems to believe that William was married twice. This might explain some of the multiple surname spellings for his wife.

William Rowan is enumerated in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, 1820; Lafayette Parish 1830 and 1850. He fought at the Battle of New Orleans under Jackson. He appears to have been married twice 1. Betsey O'Conner 2. Elizabeth Deremeant or Riman, with children from both marriages.

Yes, I had to straighten that out with some researchers a few years back. He only married once. Those names are the same which gives you some idea of the problem I am having. Betsey is a derivative of Elizabeth to those from the British Isles. The children that were attibuted to this second woman are found on the census posted on her profile. She didn't die until much later. Thanks so much for digging into this--at least I have some company!
