background image size

Does anyone know what size a background image needs to be in order to completely fill the background of a profile and not be tiled?

It would be most helpful to have this information on the background image help page :)

I think it's going to be different for different size screens and the length would depend on how long the biography is.

As Anne is saying, it will look different on every computer.  It depends on the person's screen size and screen resolution.  So even if you make it look perfect on your computer, it is likely I will still see a tiled mess that does not look the way you want it to.  For this reason, I am not a fan of using any sort of picture as a background - it often detracts rather than helps the look of a profile.

The solution then is to use a seamless background.  There are a number of pages on wikitree dedicated to them.  For example:

Joe,

To those who have mastered the application of backgrounds it appears easy.  I have attempted applying a background three times and became so frustrated that I decided to leave it till another time.

This may sound like an unusual suggestion, but I will guarantee that I am not the only one who is having difficulty with backgrounds.  Could someone who have mastered the application of a background go thru the step by step application of a background to a profile.

Write every tiny step that is done so those of us who are struggling could take this and follow it and successfully apply a background to a profile.

I want a background on all my profiles! Guarantee you will see a whole lot more backgrounds when we really know how to do them.

backgrounds

It does always seem just a little harder than it should be.  The thing which always confused me at first is exactly what am I supposed to put in the in the background image box.

1.  First you need an image already uploaded.  It does not have to be to the profile itself.  Because I think it looks dumb to have the image on the right-hand column of the profile and also as the background, I create my own free space on my profile where I store images.  My picture storage spaces are Space:Cochoit_Images and Space:Cochoit_Images2.  So you can:

  • Upload a photo to the profile
  • Create a free space page and upload the photo there
  • Use a photo from anywhere else on wikitree.

2.  You need to know the name of the photo.  The key is the name must include the .jpg part of the filename.  Click on the photo you want to use.  Scroll down and on the right you will see a section ‘Set as Background Image’  Copy the name of the image given there including the .jpg part.

For Example, the background on my profile is stored at https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Cochoit_Images-12  the name of the image is Cochoit_Images-12.jpg

3.  Go to the profile you want to set the background on.  Click edit.  Where it says set background image just paste in the image name.

I hope that makes sense.

Joe,

Thanks!  I will give it a shot and follow your instructions.  Thank you so much.
