I have seen this query only now .. Alexander Thuey, a carpenter, was a free black who arrived and lived in Troy, NY for some period of time. At various times he indicated that he was born in the Bahamas but have not proved this.
Alexander married abolitionist Phoebe Van Rensselaer in the early 1830s. The African Female Benevolent Society of Troy was formed on February 12, 1833. The purpose of the Society .. was to use intellect/education to break down the barrier of prejudice.. Phebe Thuey was elected president and Hannah Rich was elected VP.
William Rich, Alexander Thuey and Peter Jackson were elected trustees of the Liberty Street Presbyterian Church, agreeable to the laws of the state of New York. On 6 February, that year, they purchased the meeting house and its site for $1,000. Alexander attended the Convention of Colored Inhabitants of New York State as a Troy representative in 1840.
About 1845, he and Phoebe emigrated/returned to the Bahamas with their family aboard the HUDSON from Boston.
Phoebe died there in 1862; Alexander died in 1861.
