I am using a book as a source several times in the same profile

But I need to reference different pages in the same book for different points in the biography.  What is the simplest way to do this?

I frequently use <ref name=identifier>Citation.... births p. 22; marriage p. 36; jail p. 80; land p. 63 etc.</ref> Then everytime you repeat the citation use <ref name=identifier />

Could this be done as I would in a research paper:

1. Reference list at the end showing all the information regarding the source. (Bibliography)

and in the body of the bio

2. the citation looks like this  Jane was born in 1777 (Authors name:22).

Meaning you repeat the author name and add the page # at each citation.

Or, is that what the <ref = name=identifier /> does?

Confused.

Kristina, the <ref name=identifier /> bunches all the times you use the same reference together. It looks like this

2.00 2.01 2.02 2.03 2.04 2.05 2.06 2.07 2.08 2.09 2.10 2.11 2.12 2.13 2.14 2.15 Space: Sally (Felch) West Bible

You can see it on this open profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/West-6441 click on the changes tab.

Thank you, now I understand what all the numbers are in profiles.  I will try to convert.

Hi Lynn,  I used this several times when I did the profile of Barnabas Horton-196.  See this for an example.

You type the full source under==Sources=== <references />

The first time you use it in the bio you type<ref>then copy/paste the source then end with </ref>

When you next use it in your bio, you type<ref>then give the source a name, page #</ref>   In the case of Barnabas Horton-196 I used the last name of the author <ref>Dinan, p. 1</ref>

I hope I explained this effectively, so you will understand what I mean.  If not, ask and I will try to explain further.

one more thing.  If the book is not online, it is beneficial if you include quotes from the book in your bio.

There are other  ways using wiki 'language' that I'm sure people will have explained.   My simple solution is to use a short form of the reference with the page number.

ie first use

John Hutchins ''The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset '' Third edition, corrected, augmented, and improved by William Shipp and James Whitworth Hodson  1861-73 vol 3 p 465

subsequent use

Hutchins Vol 4 p 291

If the book is online then I would include the website in the first citation

ie

W. Phelps, The History and Antiquities of Somersetshire, 2 vols. (London,

1836)  Vol 1, p. 356 [https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=qx1KAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA356&lpg=PA356&dq=Mary+stork+William+Gerard+Trent&source=bl&ots=KLKvirrO1J&sig=piJZFTF-mFpp9ph7ZGcLOTA42a8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjq96mMnf_UAhXLL8AKHSSSCFwQ6AEILDAC#v=onepage&q=Mary%20stork%20William%20Gerard%20Trent&f=false  name of online source, in this case Google books]

2nd use  Phelps Vol 1 p 258

If I correctly list the book, Last Name, First; Title; Publisher; Date; under the ==Sources== section; then in the bio I just use <ref>Last Name p. #</ref> at the end of the appropriate section.  Keep in mind that I prefer to have my <references /> "Reference Collector" directly below my Sources heading.

You can also use the <span> tag, but it's a little more complicated. See this explanation

Standard genealogical procedure would suggest that you use the term "  "ibid" at the start of you source information. That refers to the last full source quoted in your profile and saves a great deal of typing. Then continue with new data in same line.
