I am looking for the surnames Tust and Hoppe in Zdunska Wola, Poland

My paternal grandfather was Edmund Tust from Zdunska Wola or Kalisz (sp?) Poland. He was born around 1891. His mother was Amalie Julianna Hoppe, his father Edward Tust from same region. He immigrated in 1922 through Ellis Island. His residence in the United States was in Lehigh County, Allentown, Pennsylvania. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Your spelling is almost correct: Zduńska Wola in województwo łódzkie and Kalisz in województwo wielkopolskie are about 38 miles from each other. For the time in question the area was part of Congress Poland which had lost it's autonomy in 1867 and was incorporated into the Russian Empire as Vistula Land (Привислинский Край). Before 1815 it had been Prussian for a few years during which period some Germans moved there. Hoppe would be a German name, perhaps the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe would have some contacts for further research, one of their focuses is Congress Poland.

Thank you. This is very helpful.

Hi Lori,

I did some searching on Geneteka, which has indexed a lot of records from the region of Poland that Edmund was from, now called the Łódź Voivodeship. Looking at the Zduńska Wola evangelical church records, there was an Edmund Thusk born to Edward Thusk and Amelia Hoppe in 1891. The name is spelled Thust in other birth records from the same parents. This is likely the same Edmund that you are looking for -  which, like Helmut suggests, would mean he was ethnically German.

The record is linked here. It is scan 47.
