Not sure if this helps?
I notice filmer is on your names too.
I have a Richard Skinner married Louisa Filmer.
Came to New Zealand as a "fencible" in about 1847-1853
The fencibles were a sort of first police force here and made up of retired military personel
He did have a son "Stephen William Filmer" so there may be a tie to the William

Check my database but have no Richard Skinner that matches your Richard Skinner. Was your Richard Skinner from Canterbury?
My Richard Skinner is from Great Chart, near Ashford in Kent
Canterbury, Kent is only 16.4 miles away, so I suspect there may be some relationship - cousin maybe - the fact that he married a filmer and you have a filmer in your tree was what interested me.

I have a lot of filmers to add from my previous research but i have time limitations (work) and I'm really trying hard to get good citations this time, so it will be a while :)
