A bit of trivia that should start hearts thumping and more than a few tales wagging: A site dedicated to the passengers of the Mayflower has listed the DNA of passenger Francis Cooke as yDNA HAPLOGROUP:  I-M223  and although I have no information about the veracity of this information, I thought you Cookes, Cooks and Wannabe Cookes just might like to know. Stick out your tongues!

Are you able to invite one or more of the Y-DNA test takers to join WikiTree and add their YSearch ID?

Thanks and sincerely, Peter

Sure, Peter, I'll post my Haplogroup, although I'm not sure who else is available beyond doing a bit of promotion. By the way, i'm a female, so info will be incomplete
My question was in regard to you inviting a Y-DNA tested male with the Cooke surname who is a descendant of Francis.

Regarding your mtDNA haplogroup, you can enter it as an Other mtDNA test.  That way your haplogroup is automatically associated with your direct maternal line.

Thanks and sincerely, Peter
I know, though I don't know anybody related to Francis Cooke, male or female. I was just showing the ease of posting to those reluctant to post "their" information. I'll take the comment down, if you like.
How do you find your halpa group? I took the Ancestry DNA test.
AncestryDNA is an autosomal DNA test which does not provide haplogroup information.  Males can learn their Y chromosome haplogroup by taking a Y-DNA test.  Males and females can learn their mitochondrial haplogroup by taking an mtDNA test.

See the five videos on the four types of DNA (useful for genealogy) at

I tried to use "DNA Descendants" to get a quick list of WikiTree profiles of people who might have his Y DNA, but I get a blank screen at http://www.wikitree.com/treewidget/Cooke-36/890

This is an odd glitch, as the widget works fine on other profiles I've clicked on today.

I sincerely hope you don't take this comment down.  You referenced a site dedicated to the passengers of the Mayflower which included Francis Cooke's Y-DNA haplogroup.  The creator of that web site likely knows the source of that information.  Perhaps the creator knows a way to e-mail the Y-DNA test taker?

Thanks and sincerely, Peter

Good thought, Cousin Peter. I just meant that I would take my own Haplogroup down, the Francis Cooke material is too fascinating to possibly be discarded! I'll ask the original site if they want to share their sources, just didn't do it before as I didn't want to create copyright infringement, but its easily searchable online if you want to speak with them yourself.

On a related, but different, topic of wide Wiki interest. Spent last weekend down at Stanford where they are working on a large DNA project. (I'm involved as a subject, not as a researcher.) But did you know that they can now construct stem cells out of other types of cells, like skin and blood. Wonders never cease!

Hi,  I'm brand new to DNA stuff.  I'm a descendant of Francis Cooke. How can I take the information you used and look at my DNA?  Newbe here!

Helo Michelle,

Welcome to WikiTree and thank you for your interest in using DNA.

One factor is your ancestrial relationship back to Francis Cooke.  So please build your ancestrial tree and connect it to one of his descendants already in WikiTree.

We need to get some of his descendants (who have been DNA tested) into WikiTree.

Here is a link for the Cooke Y DNA Project on FTDNA that supports your Francis Cooke Haplogroup I-M223.  The Mayflower Project Y DNA for Francis Cooke also shows the same Haplogroup of I-M223.
