American Loyalists

I am thinking that Sherwood Avery was a loyalist, but I am looking for confirmation. I have tried accessing various free look-up databases, but I have yet to find a match. So far, I've been able to discover he was born some time around 1750 in New York (inknown parents).  He first  appears on Canadian census records in 1806 in Leeds & Landsdowne Township and disappears  in the census records in 1813.

Can anyone help?

Leeds and Grenville? Landsdowne? Trying to figure out where Leeds and Landsdowne is.

Definition of a Loyalist

(aka Loyalist Ancestor):

  • Either male or female, as of 19 April 1775, a resident of the American colonies, and joined the Royal Standard prior to the Treaty of Separation of 1783, or otherwise demonstrated loyalty to the Crown, and settled in territory remaining under the rule of the Crown; or
  • A soldier who served in an American Loyalist Regiment and was disbanded in Canada; or
  • A member of the Six Nations of either the Grand River or the Bay of Quinte Reserve who is descended from one whose migration was similar to that of other Loyalists. [2]

I am scanning for him now...

I see a Joseph and a William Avery on the official listing.

His showing up on an 1808/09 Census in Canada is the right timing too. Many of the loyalists lived in one of the Refugee camps for a year or so, before making their way to other parts (many in the area of Leeds).

Check the information on the project page to see if you can find him in any of the resources listed or if you can track down information from the Refugee camps. If you find other resources we can add to our list, please let me know.

Once you find him you can make an application to the EULAC for official recognition.

The township is found around the Gananoque River and, according to my research,  there was a loyalist settlement in that area.

I've always wondered if Sherwood Avery was a relative of  Captain Justus Sherwood.
